Picture

The 1.85:1 Anamorphic presentation looks suitable impressive right from the start (well after the Columbia Logo which is dirty and covered in print damage). There is quite an improvement in the image quality when compared to the original R1 release of a few years ago. The print looks nice and clean with no apparent damage or grain and contains an impressive amount of detail. Colours are also realistic and natural looking with no signs of bleed or blooming, blacks are also rich and solid with good shadow detail on show. Flesh tones are also well reproduced and contain good detail in close up scenes.

There are a few niggles with the print however, with edge enhancement rearing it's ugly head on more than one occasion, and some scenes (although not many) have a slight halo effect present which produces a softer look to the transfer, these are mainly long wide angled shots.

This is definitely an improvement over the existing R1 version and overall looks quite impressive.

Sound

Presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 (448kbps) and DTS (768kbps) the sound mix is very lively and adds well to the action onscreen. The numerous space battles and fights on the various planet surfaces use the sound field perfectly with deep powerful bass and intelligent surround mixing and panning. The stand out moment in this movie is a bug attack on an army base. The scene builds with the camera pulling back to reveal thousands of bugs approaching in an ambush maneuver. The LFE and surround channels start to sing with the screeches of these beast mixed with repeater gunfire as you are immersed in the soundtrack, excellent stuff indeed. Moving between the DTS and Dolby variants of the soundtrack I found the DTS mix to add the more realistic and enveloping feel to the proceedings, bass was tighter and better controlled and the track felt more open and detailed, but the Dolby track is no slouch.

Extras

None present, this is a superbit title afterall
Starship Troopers: Superbit Collection
A film that will (if it already hasn't) go down as a Sci-Fi classic and is presented here with excellent picture and sound.
