Picture
The picture is presented in its original 1.37:1 aspect ratio and has been cleaned up throughout. The 35mm negative has undergone a cleaning process called the Mathematical Technologies Digital Restoration System which was utilized to remove 23,235 instances of dirt, scratches and debris. The result is a clear, stunning-looking black and white transfer with deep blacks, luminous whites and excellent shadow detail throughout. In fact it is one of the best examples of a black and white transfer I have ever seen and the image just jumps of the screen. Criterion need to take most of the praise for this, as the movie was never released on Laserdisc and it was only when they managed to secure the rights for this film, that the clean up process began, and it looks fantastic.
Sound
The sound is mono and has also been given a clean up and sounds very good indeed. There is no background hiss present and dialogue is clear and intelligible, even if it is French and I don't understand it
Extras
Presented are a video interview with Jules Dassin which focuses on why he was blacklisted and the problems he had in the production process. Also included are production stills and set design drawings along with production notes and a trailer. Not a great deal of extra features but what is here is very good.
A Real classic movie presented with an outstanding picture and a small but adequate list of extras.
