Picture

Shame that Warners couldn't have treated this somewhat better though. It's essentially a straight dump to DVD and while it looks better than the video released titles, it's still not as good as it could be. A lot of dust specs still remain on each episode, which tarnishes it somewhat, but colours are bright and vivid, with no sign of compression artefacts or other digital issues. It's a hard one to score as while the image is fine, they should have cleaned it up to make it look pristine, and as such I've marked it accordingly.

Sound

While this has a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, it's not particularly exciting and really it shouldn't be. The main difference between this and the stereo soundtrack is that the vocal work comes out of the centre speaker, with the surrounds used mostly for some ambient music. However, in the episode “Plan Brain from Outer Space”, we do get a flying saucer fly from back to front speakers, which was a nice touch. It's not particularly exhilarating stuff, but it does the trick.

Extras

Only one extra is present on this boxset, the featurette “Are you pondering what I'm pondering”, which runs for approximately 25 minutes. It's an interesting documentary regarding the show with the original voice talent and so forth. No sign of Spielberg was present, but a couple of interesting facts and anecdotal stories regarding him were present, such as how he was always very involved in the show. Nice, but some other extras, such as commentary tracks, would have been nice though.

Pinky And The Brain: Volume 1
What can I say - I'm a huge fan of the show and as such, I can't give it anything other than a glowing recommendation. It's fun, it's zany and irreverent and will appeal to the kids and the kid within you as well. Buy it now and enjoy one of the best animated shows ever. Zort!
