Overnight/The Boondock Saints DVD Review

Picture

The Boondock Saints

The picture here is presented as an anamorphic widescreen 2.40:1 picture and is generally pretty good. The palette has a slightly muted feel to it and I wasn't sure if this was intentional or if it was because of the low budget production or age of the print, either way, once into the movie one soon stopped noticing it. There were no technical issues with image such as grain or artefacts.

Overnight

The picture here is presented as non anamorphic 1.85:1. As mentioned in the main review, this is archive, amateur home video footage so technical issues with the disc's image pale into insignificance when the source material is of such low quality. The image does improve as the documentary progresses due to the filmmakers getting the money to buy a better camera!

Sound

The Boondock Saints

This release only has a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack which is a shame as there are other versions out there with Dolby Digital 5.1. It was functional, but there was very little surround or even stereo action. A very basic, functional soundtrack - much in keeping with the spartan nature of this disc.

Overnight

This release also only has a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack. This is kind of to be expected for a documentary, especially one where all of the footage is amateur home video. Unlike the movie itself, this doesn't really matter here. I would say however that especially with the older footage the sound quality was very poor due to a poor mic and excessive background noise. The lack of subtitles here was an annoyance.

Extras

The Boondock Saints

This is the most basic DVD I have ever seen...and I'm including freebies and people's holiday snaps in that!! On start-up you are presented with a static image of the two “Saints” and the word PLAY. That's it. Not even a chapter menu. No extras, no subtitles, no other languages - nada. Bizarre!

Overnight

Thankfully this DVD has some extras unlike its movie partner, although by most other discs standards the extras here are pretty poor.

Directors Interview (5m25s)

This is a clip from a TV show which interviews the two film makers. It doesn't really contain anything of value other than the fact that they haven't spoken with Duffy for 3 years (and after this I doubt they will again!).

There are also some Deleted Scenes (4m49s), an Alternate Ending (a rather pointless 48s worth) and the Theatrical Trailer.

The Boondock Saints

This is a love/hate film. I originally hated it but on my second viewing found it more watchable, although it is still not really my cup of tea, atleast now I can see why some love this movie and have made it into a bit of a cult hit. I can see the potential here and hope that a sequel builds on the best bits.

Overnight

However you view Duffy or The Boondock Saints, you will find this documentary captivating. Watching an arrogant, foul-mouthed bully get his comeuppance makes fascinating viewing. However, many may not want to watch 80 minutes of a foul mouthed bully in the first place, downward spiral or not. I'm not sure of the repeat viewing potential here and as a DVD package it doesn't offer much. Unless you are a real fan (or Duffy hater!), I would say this is one for rental or wait till it is shown on TV.
