Out of Time Movie Review

Hop to

A movie with Denzel Washington's name above the title is usually worthy of a look and Out Of Time is no exception. Directed by the reliable if uninspiring Carl Franklin, Out Of Time is a taught and racy thriller set in the sultry Florida Keys. Heavily inspired by [b]Body Heat[b] the movie is an extremely enjoyable diversion which doesn't quite reach the lofty heights of Lawrence Kasdan's classic noir, but gives it a good run for its money.

Washington plays Matt Lee Whitlock, the Chief of Police in the quiet Florida backwater of Banyan Key. Whitlock is not squeaky clean despite a recent drug bust that raised his profile and resulted in the seizure of hundreds of thousands of dollars, now residing in the Chief's office safe. Whitlock is in the process of divorcing his wife Alex (Eva Mendes) an FBI agent in Miami, and simultaneously having a torrid affair with Ann Harrison (Sanaa Lathan) the voluptuous wife of local thug Chris Harrison (Dean Cain). The convoluted plot takes more twists than a curly-wurly, but needless to say the characters and money become embroiled, and Whitlock must try to solve the murder of the Harrisons with the FBI hot on his trail, and all the evidence pointing firmly in his direction.

Director Franklin has a solid if unspectacular pedigree with the worthy [b]Devil In A Blue Dress[b], and the watchable [b]High Crimes[b] the most notable of his directorial outings. His strength here is the intriguing story, the acting of Washington who continues to show his tremendous ability to convince an audience, despite a plotline that occasionally stretches credibility, and the wonderful Florida setting which has not been used this well since [b]The Mean Season[b] in 1985. Sanaa Lathan, most recently seen in [b]AvP[b] exudes sex and menace in equal quantities as Whitlock's mistress, and rivals the Floridian sunsets for memorable beauty. This cat and mouse thriller will reward the viewer with solid, enjoyable entertainment.
