One Tree Hill is by no means a new breed in television entertainment. Its parents are shows such as Dawson's Creek and The O.C. and its grandparents are Beverley Hills 90210 and Varsity Blues. From this you should have guessed, if you are not already a fan, that One Tree Hill is one of those High School teen angst dramas that seem to do so well with the youth of today both here and even more so across the pond. The genre tries to gain a young fan base by portraying scenarios that those same people have actually experienced and can identify with. That's the idea anyway, and with the popularity of such shows, it seems to be working too.
More specifically, One Tree Hill, and in particular this second series revolves around the pupils who attend Tree Hill High and the stories of their loves, ambitions, hopes, fears and above all, secrets. It's another year and the group have moved up to the junior year. (25 year olds in the junior year at High School? yeah right!) The love triangle drama from last season between Lucas (Chad Michael Murray), Peyton (Hilarie Burton), and Brooke (Sophia Bush) appears to have been resolved, and all three have become friends with one another now. Brooke finds herself attracted to her new neighbour, Felix (Michael Copon), and the two eventually get it on. Felix's younger sister, Anna (Daniella Alonso) finds herself attracted to Lucas, but she has some secrets of her own to hide. Felix brings much of the drama to Tree Hill between the teens in the second season, by intimidating everyone, and in the classic 'Dare Night' he arranges.
Nathan (James Lafferty) and Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz) announced in the season one finale that they got married, so now, the second season has them starting to deal with their new situation. Things don't exactly go as smoothly as they had planned. There are temptations along the line, as well as them having to deal with their individual ambitions which begins to force them apart from one another. Haley starts a musical career with Chris Keller (Tyler Hilton), a new guy in town, and eventually, she leaves both Tree Hill and Nathan to go on a concert tour across the US, leaving Nathan devastated.
Confused? Me too!
One Tree Hill relies heavily on its music to appeal to a younger audience. Even the title of the show is taken from a U2 track off their Joshua Tree Album. Again this is nothing new and most, if not all of this genre uses contemporary music as a way of identifying with its audience, but One Tree Hill uses music as an intricate part of its storyline. Many episodes are named after rock or punk songs too. One thing that these types of show have that doesn't accurately reflect reality is the most beautifully perfect human specimens on the planet. I mean if they looked like that at my High School, then I would still be there at 38!
Anyway, what you really want to know is it any good? Well, I can definitely see the appeal to those still making it through the education system or more generally, those under 30 and it's one of those shows that you end up adopting a character that most closely resembles your predicament and rooting for them throughout. But it isn't too original to be honest and I would definitely recommend watching the first season before this one. If you did watch the first and enjoyed it then I'm sure you'll find this second season equally entertaining and you'll be rewarded with a deeper look at the characters within as well as some fresh new faces too.
