M*A*S*H Season Six Collectors Edition DVD Review
SRP: £29.99

Picture

The picture is not bad at all for a seventies TV programme. It's been re-mastered and it shows. For most of the time it is a pretty good transfer. There are few scratches or dirt in the print, and little in the way of compression artefacts or edge enhancement. The colours are rather de-saturated and faded but it's not particularly disagreeable, as being set in a frontline area practically everything is olive drab and shades of brown anyway. Black levels range from good to average with some episodes having better contrast levels and shadow detail than others. Occasionally the quality slips for a moment as the contrast may go awry in a scene or grain appears in a dark area before it corrects itself. These inconsistencies mark it down a tad, but it's still a decent full screen presentation overall.

Sound

It's a solid Dolby Digital mono track. With such vintage source material it's as good as you could get really. The dialogue is clear and any background effects are well mixed. There's also a quirky feature that is a boon - the ability to remove the canned laughter track.

Extras

No Extras I'm afraid.
M*A*S*H Season Six Collectors Edition
Despite the lamentable lack of extras, the box-set has a lot going for it, with a good presentation and over ten and a half hours of quality comedy viewing.

Well written plots + likeable characters + snappy one liners = Comedy gold!
