Picture

The 1.85:1 anamorphically enhanced image is eminently average looking. The slightly soft picture suffers a tad too much video noise, which is noticeable as soon as the movie starts. Brighter scenes show a definite improvement, and with a distinct lack of edge enhancement overall quality appears reasonably smooth albeit with a slight lack of sharp detail.

At the end of the day this does not have that big budget movie look and, despite costing an estimated twenty million dollars - pretty substantial for a dialogue driven movie dating from 1994, always appears... eminently average.

Sound

And the feeling of “averageness” merely continues in the audio stakes - despite the numerous rich and smooth sounding musical interludes that add a touch of class to the general ambiance of the movie, Jimmy Hollywood continues in the “average” trend. Dialogue is always clear, with the Dolby Digital 448Kbps audio track being fairly front soundstage oriented - even the numerous gunshots sound a little hollow and sharp. This is no Lord Of The Rings... but no one will expect it to be. Expect it to do “exactly what it says on the tin” in other words.

Extras

The movie just cries out for a Pesci/Slater/Levinson audio commentary... but there's nuffink here - not even a trailer!
Jimmy Hollywood
I don't think I've ever used the word “average” so many times within a movie review - I'm beginning to think that if I look up the word in the Oxford English Dictionary the definition will read - Jimmy Hollywood.
