Ice Princess is a charming little movie... typically Disney - simple, down-to-earth, moralistic fun. It tells the story of Casey Carlyle (Michelle Trachtenberg), a young college student and physics whiz who decides to write a paper on the mechanics of ice-skating. Like any geek, she somehow manages to grasp the meaning behind the physical difficulties of the sport, and this in turn leads to a desire to put what she has understood into practice. But can a science nerd really transform herself into an ice-skating gold medal contender? Carlyle turns to local trainer Tina Harwood, played by the ever-consistent Kim Cattrall, to help in her quest and her dreams look like they may just be reachable. Alas, Harwood may not be as genuine as she appears, and when Carlyle's mother (Joan Cusack) discovers her daughter may have scuppered chances of a Harvard scholarship our young heroine's future becomes more uncertain than ever.
Despite the simplistic nature of this tale, I liked Ice Princess; it's the kind of movie you can watch with the whole family... or, dare I suggest, get your mates round on a Saturday evening, stock up with a few bevies, order in the Pizza, slap in the DVD and enjoy yourselves cheering for the underdog. And why not?!
