Michael Mann's study of professionals on both sides of the law is a true masterpiece of modern cinema. Following the lives of these characters - brought to the screen by a cast which includes Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Tom Sizemore, and Jon Voight - proves an engrossing ride as we are dragged from action set-pieces to domestic problems and back again. Indeed, away from the (in all honesty, fantastic) set-pieces, such as the bank raid in the middle of the film, it is the focus on the men's relationships, and the emphasis on the women in their lives, which really holds the film together. Packing in as much emotion as it does thrills, this is cops-and-robbers at its finest.
