Haunted Castle Movie Review

Hop to

In this 36-minute film you take a heart-stopping journey through a haunted castle, meeting malevolent spirits, winged demons, animated suits of armour, a beautiful ghost and a slimy underground labyrinth infested with spectres.

Originally a giant-screen IMAX short film, Haunted Castle comes as a two-disc pack containing the 3D movie on one disc, a pair of Colorcode 3D glasses (extra pairs are available), and a second disc with a 2D version with multi-language subtitles, trailer, teaser, director's commentary, Making of..., credits and electronic press kit. Both have fine DD 5.1/DTS sound.

The history of 3D in the cinema isn't glorious; limited by the requirement for 3D glasses, it's used mainly for shock effects in horror and Western movies. The best examples are the shorts shot for giant-screen Imax cinemas, which Escapi has been putting onto DVD for some time. This is the first attempt to handle 3D on DVD - so does it work? Well, there are problems. One is that the transfer is soft and fuzzy, which is surprising. Another is that the CGI graphics look their age - a lot has happened in the last couple of years.

The third is that the 3D effect just doesn't work as well at home as it does in an IMAX cinema. So finally, this may be an amusing novelty, but we'll wait for Escapi's future titles before giving 3D DVD the thumbs up.
