Picture

Right from the start you can't help but be impressed with the sharpness and amount of detail on show. Colours are well saturated with strong blacks and plenty of shadow detail. The exterior daytime scenes just look incredibly three dimensional with tons of back ground detail and lush skin tones. The print is also remarkably clean with no damage or dirt present and only the slightest amount of grain is seen in the darkest shots. There are occasional glimpses of edge enhancement on our 7.5ft review screen and the odd compression artefact, but you have to be looking very hard to see them. This is an epic transfer for an epic movie, top class!

Sound

The disc features Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 soundtracks, and they are both excellent. The dialogue is rich and detailed and the entire track sounds dynamic and enveloping. The surrounds are used to great effect and the sounds of the Five points come to life in a 360 degree soundfield that is sublime with deep lush bass and a crystal clear high end. The DTS track sounds that little bit more detailed and natural with tighter bass and a more natural sound mix. Both are first class and just add to the epic feel and visual of the movie.

Extras

First up is a fascinating Feature Commentary with Martin Scorsese where his enthusiasm for the project just shines through and we are given some interesting insights into what he was trying to achieve. Also featured are a detailed look at the set design, costumes and the history of the Five Points, (the location was almost the exact standing place of the Twin Trade Towers). There are also a 30 minute Discovery Channel special on the real gangs of New York and finally a set of trailers. Overall the extras package adds to the movie and the history of the New York slums.
Gangs Of New York
The movie is epic in it's scale and story telling and the disc is just superb, highly recommended.
