Picture

Presented in 2.35:1 Anamorphic widescreen the print is clean and looks clear of any dirt and scratches. The varied 60's colour palette looks solid with excellent reproduction and saturation with blacks looking stable. There are no signs of colour bleed or blooming present and skin tones appear natural throughout.

While there is a good amount of detail on show, the print does look a little soft for the duration, but this appears to be deliberate and ties in with the time period that the movie mimics.

There are a few small flaws present with the presentation such as edge enhancement which is quite prominent in a few scenes. There are also slight problems with encoding problems with pixilation seen in a few scenes here and there. But overall this presentation is very good indeed and captures the details present in the art design perfectly.

Sound

For a period comedy such as this, the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack actually has quite a bit to do. Dialogue is always clean and crisp and easy to follow throughout. The surrounds are used to reinforce the movies score and creates an enveloping feel to the sound mix adding little nuances of ambiance here and there to good effect.

The film doesn't call for over the top sound design but the sound mix here is very good for a movie of this genre and adds to the overall production nicely.

Extras

Kicking off the extras is a commentary track with director Reed which is actually a very well put together track. He covers stories from the set and explains how much of the look of the movie was captured. Next are deleted scenes with commentary which whilst not adding much to the movie or it's pacing, are interesting to view. Other extras include a very funny blooper reel (who am I? You're Obi Wan), An HBO special, six featurettes covering design, costumes, sound design and score, split screen use, Cameos and a music promo. Rounding off is the talk show clip and the musical number on their own.
Down With Love
A different kind of Hollywood picture which is fun and quaint with good humour and performances presented on a standard disc with some good extras.
