Day Of The Dead (Divimax Special Edition) DVD Review
SRP: £29.98

Picture

This is the first of Anchor Bay's new
Divimax DVDs I have seen, and I
am impressed with the results. The
anamorphic 1.85:1 transfer benefits
immensely from the Divimax high-def
transfer process and results in the
best looking version of the film we
have ever come across. Detail levels
are impeccable, colours are natural
and the only complaint I have is the
presence of haloing in a few shots.

Sound

Audio comes in both Dolby Digital 5.1
EX and DTS 6.1 ES flavours, and
both sound very good. There is a fair
amount of ambient material piped
into the rears, and the front of the
soundstage is agreeably lively. For
those with more limited setups, a
Dolby 2.0 Surround mix is included.

Extras

As the first disc is given over to an
optimum bitrate transfer, the only
extras you'll find there are an audio
commentary from Romero, Savini,
production designer Cletus Anderson
and Lori Cardille, plus a surprisingly
enjoyable second commentary by fan
and filmmaker Roger Avary.
Disc Two offers a new 39-minute
retrospective documentary, a behindthe-
scenes featurette, an audio
interview with actor Robert Liberty,
an archival promo for the facility where
the film was shot, three trailers, three
TV spots, seven photo galleries, a
Romero bio and DVD-ROM material
including Romero's now-legendary first
draft screenplay. A small collectible
booklet containing an essay on the
film is also included. After countless prior releases, we finally get
a definitive version of Day of the Dead. So
no more please!
