Das Boot The Director's Cut Superbit DVD Review

Director Wolfgang Petersen came to prominence with the TV version of this gripping submarine story, later edited into a movie. This is a SuperBit DVD version of the director's cut. Jurgen Prochnow is the brave captain of German U-boat 96, charged with patrolling the North Atlantic, challenging Allied vessels and running the gauntlet of the Straits of Gibraltar to sabotage the British Navy base. One of the best war films of all time. In German with optional English subtitles, this 16:9 anamorphic transfer is clean, colourful and certainly sharper than the original DVD, but some dark scenes seem over-exposed and there is conspicuous edge enhancement. Sound is a choice of German DTS or DD 5.1, and English DPL. No extras.
