Dances With Wolves DVD Review
SRP: £19.99

Picture

After careful inspection, we're glad to report that we have nothing really derogatory to say about the anamorphic 2.35:1 transfer. Costner as director strives for a naturalistic approach to the film (although we're hardly talking Ken Loach here), and as such apart from the lovingly shot vistas, there really isn't all that much to shout about. But it's a pretty good job nonetheless.

Sound

Surprisingly enough, the pretty spectacular Dolby Digital 5.1 mix isn't the real highpoint of this DVD, as Pathé has also been kind enough to grace this package with a wonderfully realised DTS mix which does wonders for the film's soundtrack. Spatial effects are carefully placed, and the surround speakers are continually pressed into service for ambient effects. However, it's the richness and range of the DTS track which really impresses making this prime demo material for any true audiophile.

Extras

The high point of the disc in terms of additional material is easily the feature-length commentary provided by Kevin Costner and co-producer Jim Wilson which, while a little self-congratulatory at times, provides plenty of additional background material about the making of the movie. Also on offer is the original theatrical trailer, a brief video profile of Costner, and a reasonably informative, if a little short, production featurette
Dances With Wolves
A vastly over-rated addition to the Western genre on a pretty well specified DVD
