Crow, The: 2-Disc Collector's Edition DVD Review

With this DVD, UK fans can finally watch The Crow in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Presented anamorphically, the image is rather grainy due to its low-budget origins, but the detail levels and resolution simply can't be faulted. For Luddites, Disc Two features the 4:3 version of the film, which doesn't hold up as well (not that anyone will care).

The widescreen version of the movie includes both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS mixes. Most of the surround mix is given over to the music, but the extra bass and directional steering adds immensely to the many action sequences. Meanwhile, the 4:3 version comes with a suitably lacklustre stereo surround mix.

In addition to two viewing formats for the film itself, EiV has also sourced a plethora of Crow-related goodies for this two-disc release. Accompanying the widescreen version on Disc One is an audio commentary from producer Jeff Most and screenwriter John Shirley, three extended scenes and a reel of deleted footage (the only disappointment here is the absence of any footage of the infamous Skull Cowboy, aside from a brief shadowy glimpse). Over on Disc Two, the 4:3 version of the film comes packed with a 17-minute Making of..., an interview with James O'Barr, Brandon Lee's last on-camera interview, galleries of production and poster art, five animated storyboard sequences and a very informative piece comparing the widescreen version of the film to the 4:3 version. Completing this very desirable package are some of the most stylish and beautifully realised animated menu screens we've seen.Still one of the best comic book adaptations in cinematic history, The Crow finally gets the DVD treatment it's always deserved.
