Carlito Brigante (Pacino), a one-time drug boss and gangster is released early from a long-term prison sentence on a technicality. Returning to the East Harlem streets he grew up in, Carlito no longer recognises the world he was once a part of, and getting back together with his former girlfriend (Miler) he decides to go straight. But he hasn't counted on his devious lawyer (Penn) who drags him back into the underworld.
Following lapses of judgement like Bonfire Of The Vanities and Raising Cain, Brian De Palma regained his critical standing with this thrilling tale of latino gangsters in '70s New York.
This is a thrilling and moving cinematic experience in which De Palma and his excellent cast seem to relish the opportunity to really explore their characters and motivations, plus a couple of action set-pieces in a pool hall and Grand Central Station which are easily as good as anything the director has done. Penn in particular benefits from a role that redefined his career as an actor. The recreation of the period is superb, and the disco soundtrack is rounded out with a host of Latino musical numbers.
