Carlito's Way DVD Review
SRP: £19.99

Picture

Thankfully, this 2.35:1 transfer captures Stephen H Burum's stunning cinematography in a way that the video release never managed. The interior of the club in Chapter 4 shows the strength of the colour fidelity as the location throws neon reds and blues all across the screen.

Sound

Like many 'older' films that have been remixed for a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, Carlito's Way doesn't really have that much to offer the full mix. Several locations and set-pieces do offer great examples of surround sound (such as the pool hall shoot-out in Chapter 3) and it offers solid dialogue and music presentation, just don't expect anything too revolutionary from it.

Extras

The production notes do a good job of tracing the film's history, but the only other extras are outdated cast notes, and the theatrical trailer. Where are the interviews, the making-of documentary, or commentary track from De Palma himself? A film of this stature deserves much better treatment.
