Buffalo Soldiers DVD Review
SRP: £17.99
A great disc for this funny and charming look at
the more idiotic side of army life. More M*A*S*H
than Dr Strangelove, though.

Picture

With this DVD, VCI has
delivered the latest in a long line of
impressive and naturalistic transfers.
Presented anamorphically at the original
2.35:1 aspect ratio, the image is always
crisp and rich. Colours are perfect, with no
trace of bleed on even the brightest
offerings (just check out the sharp edges
on the American flag that fills the frame at
the start of Chapter 2). The darker
locations (such as the interior of the
German nightclub in Chapter 10) offer
solid blacks and plenty of shadow detail.

Sound

We were pleasantly surprised to
discover that not only does the disc offer
up the obligatory Dolby Digital 5.1 mix,
but also a DTS mix that wasn't included
on the American release. There's not
really much to call between the two
mixes, but both deliver a solid and
evocative audio experience, with strong
use of the surrounds and crystal clear
dialogue reproduction.

Extras

FilmFour/VCI's disc also outdoes
Buena Vista's American release in the
extra features department. Items carried
across from that release include an
enlightening, and often very funny, audio
commentary by director Gregor Jordan,
a short but interesting Making of...
featurette and the brilliant Anatomy of a
Scene, which gives an in-depth look at
the creation of the infamous tanks n'
drugs scene from the film, going from
writing to location scouting, design,
acting and editing.
Chief amongst the additional extras on
this UK release is a ten-minute interview
with Jordan, which does repeat a little of
the material he discusses in his
commentary, but also features enough
new material to make it of interest to fans.
Following on are interview soundbites from
Joaquin Phoenix, Gregor Jordan, Scott
Glenn, Ed Harris and Anna Paquin, all of
which smack of coming from the film's
EPK, but still provide a few nuggets of
interesting information. Lastly, you get the
theatrical trailer.
