Black Hawk Down Movie Review

Hop to

Based on an actual event, Black Hawk Down tells a chilling story of how even the most carefully planned military action can go horribly wrong in a matter of minutes.

A team of Delta Force Soldiers and American Rangers undertake a short mission in Mogadishu, Somalia, to capture a warlord. At first everything seems to be going to plan, but it isn't long before two helicopters are shot down and the surviving troops are stranded in hostile territory.

Despite the involvement of Jerry Bruckheimer, Black Hawk Down isn't just a brainless blockbuster. Instead, it's a carefully crafted attempt to throw the audience into one of the most frightening situations imaginable today - something it captures perfectly. However, the violence is unrelenting (imagine the opening of Saving Private Ryan played almost non-stop for over 90 minutes), and the fact that over half of the cast look just like Josh Hartnett does make it a little disorientating at times. Still, even if it isn't one of the best war films ever made, the DVD release is definitely something special.
