Picture

Poor. While the picture tries to do a “Shield” by rocking the camera and adding digital noise, the effect is somewhat lost, here. I can understand why it has been done but for some reason the grain seems to be a bit too forced. A rather bleaker, shadowy setting doesn't help, either, especially when the ungrained picture wasn't that good to start with. Detail isn't sharp, but is bearable allowing the viewer to become part of the universe, but only just. Contrasts are fine, but some on world scenes are a bit to over exposed, whether by choice or not. CGI scenes are all well done, albeit not up to the Trek canon's standards. Crash zooms and POV shots make the CGI output kinetic in nature suiting the feel of their content.

Sound

Utterly unremarkable. While there is a 5.1 mix, here, the sound never really breaks the mundane, with rear speakers used in an overly subtle manner. Bass fairs a bit better with some explosions carrying the required weight. Speech is sometimes muted, lacking a sparkle that is indicative of the sound as a whole. Recessed and flat, the sound never shines save in some of the final scenes where musical queues are well produced and well chosen

Extras

Deleted scenes are your lot, even if there are a lot of them. There is a way to get commentaries for all episodes and that is by following the below link. Here, you can download or receive a podcast of commentaries of select episodes. Not an extra for the boxset, per se, but at least by buying the boxset you can appreciate them.

Battlestar Galactica Season 1
One of the best. I can't heap enough praise for BSG. The only people who won't like this are those weaned on diluted popcorn Sci-fi or “Badge loyal” fans of other series. For everyone else, enjoy.
