Amityville: The Evil Escapes DVD Review
SRP: £12.99

Picture

I'll let you make up your own judgement here... I'll just say US 80's 4:3 TV movie and you can work out whether this is going to push your system or not... The image here has to be one of the worst I've ever seen on DVD. The full screen 1.33:1 image ranges from blurry, dark and grainy to oversaturated and blooming. It is a classic example of why people used to criticise the old “never the same colour twice” US NTSC TV format. The whole image feels like it is covered by a dark cloud - and having watched this movie, I can fully understand that. There is even a line running down the left hand side of the image which makes this feel like someone has simply digitised a VHS copy.

Sound

You'd be surprised to see a 5.1 soundtrack here and you'd be right. There is an English Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack that matches exactly it's TV origins - so no bass, no surround, not even any stereo effect - this is effectively a dual channel mono soundtrack and apart from rendering the speech reasonably it not even worth commenting on.

Amityville: The Evil Escapes
Amityville: The Evil Escapes is one for serious horror fans only - as a casual viewer I was disappointed in most aspects of this film but most importantly, it has no scares and even as a non-Horror expert, to me that seems fairly essential. The disc itself gives the impression that this has been released purely to cash in on the renewed interest in the Amityville remake as there are no extras and the audio and video have been untouched since their TV debut. This is a terrible DVD of a poor film.
