3 Spike Lee Joints DVD Review

Despite some intrusive moments of grain, Do the Right Thing's anamorphic 1.85:1 transfer is first-rate. The colours are rich and well saturated, the detail levels are exemplary and the source print has been lovingly restored removing any dirt and scratches.

The weakest looking transfer of the three films in the collection is Jungle Fever. Presented anamorphically in the original 1.85:1 ratio, there's little to fault technically about the transfer, but the source print demonstrates far too much grain and minor damage for a film that isn't much more than ten years old.

Despite a few problems (such as excessive grain and artificially enhanced chroma levels) Clockers' anamorphic 1.85:1 transfer holds up pretty well. Colours are strong and vivid with impressive fidelity, while details levels remain strong throughout.

Do the Right Thing's stereo surround audio never really excels at any point, but nor does it ever really disappoint. Dialogue is clear and the steering across the front speakers is well realised. The only real downer is the lack of bass in the mix, which really niggles when the film focuses on Radio Raheem and his 'boom-box'.

Jungle Fever is mostly dialogue led, and as such there isn't too much for the disc's stereo surround mix to handle. At least the dialogue stays perfectly audible throughout.

Clockers is the only film here to feature a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track. Unfortunately, this isn't the step up you'd hope from the previous stereo mixes, as the surrounds are only really given over to subtle ambience and music reproduction, and the occasionally muddied dialogue sometimes gets lost in the mix.

All three discs include trailers for each title in the collection, but Do the Right Thing goes that extra mile by adding a fantastic full-length audio commentary by Spike Lee and various members of the crew, a 60-minute Making of... documentary, a brief collection of home movie footage, a featurette following Lee as he revisits locations from the film and storyboards for the riot sequence.The Do the Right Thing DVD is well worth £20, meaning that you get the other two films in the collection for a tenner. Bargain!
