    U-571 DVD Review
    SRP: £19.99

This 1.85:1 anamorphic picture would be satisfying if you didn't know that the movie was shot in 2.35:1, and the Region 1 disc was in that format too. So who do we blame? EIV, for being buffoons, or ourselves for not doing more to insist on getting the correct aspect ratios on discs? Other than that, the picture is fine, with a high level of detail, strong colours and no problems on difficult scenes such as the storms and the smoky interiors.

You have a choice of Dolby Digital 5.1 or stereo soundtracks. On the 5.1 option, imaging, clarity and levels are excellent, with everything from dialogue to popping rivets being perfectly audible. Check out the rear effects in the gunfight as the crew takes over the German sub in Chapter 7. Apart from the thumpingly derivative score, the only problem is that the R1 disc had a DTS soundtrack, and the R2 version doesn't. Come on EIV, what are you playing at?

An excellent selection of extras includes a directors commentary, a trailer, a Spotlight On Location featurette, a historical background featurette about the real U-boat, U-110, and interviews by the director with WW2 submariners and a cryptologist.
Suggested retail price when reviewed: £19.99
