PictureThe non-anamorphic 1.85:1 transfer is perfectly acceptable, if not quite as good as we were really hoping for. The source print was obviously pretty clean, but colours seem a little too light, with blacks lacking real depth.
SoundThere are six soundtrack options on offer on the DVD. For both the original Japanese and the English dub you get the choice of Dolby Stereo Surround, DD 5.1 EX and DTS 6.1 ES. All of the mixes are superb, with impressive dynamic range, plenty of low-end bass and precise movement.
ExtrasDisappointingly, Manga's disc for The End of Evangelion offers nothing more than a commentary and a trio of trailers. The commentary by the English voice director Amanda Winn Lee and English voice actors Taliesin Jaffe and Jason Lee is certainly fun, but it fails to add anything really substantial to your understanding of the series.
VerdictMagnificent anime on a disc that excels and disappoints in equal measures. Can we have the original series now?
