Stargate SG-1: Volume 39 DVD Review
PictureSimilar to the review of Volume 38 this picture cannot be faulted in any way and should be a bench mark for other shows to follow. Presented in widescreen, which is now becoming standard for popular television shows, this transfer shines on the digital format. Sharp images and fine detail are presented through every scene. Rich and vibrant colours fill the screen through the many effects and computer-generated sequences. This really is a great example of a quality transfer.
SoundThe DVD includes a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. Whilst this is certainly a great improvement over a 2 channel stereo track it does not really have much in the way of rear speaker effects. It has not been used as fully as it could have been. I guess this is more due to the fact that it was probably not recorded in 5 channels but was re-engineered post production for the DVD.
Even so, I can't really complain much because to have a surround sound soundtrack for a television programme is surely an added bonus. Let's hope other TV to DVD shows follow the same route!
ExtrasThere are two main extras to this disc.
'From Stargate To Atlantis: The Lowdown Part Two'. This follows on from the previous disc but explores the new spin off series Atlantis. I have seen this advertised but have yet to catch an episode. By all accounts it looks to be a winner. There is some background into the show and also a look at the different characters and actors that will play the regular lead parts.
'SG1 Directors Series: Covenant'. This is another great feature that looks at the filming of an episode from the Director's point-of-view.
The usual photo gallery is also included. For a television show these set of extras are more than enough and if each disc continued this trend then I would be more than happy.
VerdictA great collection of episodes to add to your collection. As usual, it is presented in fabulous digital quality. Maybe an improvement in the 5.1 sound steering would be welcomed, but other than that this is a top DVD. I am ready to step through the gate for the next instalment!
