If you've read my review of episode IV of this Limited Edition trilogy release, you will know I'm a big fan of Star Wars. At the time of its release, Return of the Jedi was criticised for the 'cute' Ewoks, and Barry Norman, (presenting Film '83) thought that cutting between the 3 battles at the end interrupted the flow of the action negatively. I'd have none of it, however. I was (and am) a die hard fan.
Perhaps the ultimate in Star Wars sentimentality is to turn the clock back nearly 30 years and watch the trilogy before George Lucas 'tweaked' it. This is now possible as all three original theatrical versions are released for the first time as Limited Editions on September 12th. All three DVDs come as two-disc sets with the same 'Special Edition' version of the movie as released in 2004 on disc 1 and the 'original theatrical version' on the bonus disc.
The same audio tracks and commentaries accompany the special editions so the reason for buying these DVDs, then, is purely to own the original theatrical versions of the movies.
