Samsung UE55JS9000 (JS9000) Curved 4K SUHD TV
What is the Samsung UE55JS9000?The UE55JS9000 is a high-end 55-inch curved Ultra HD 4K TV from Samsung. It forms part of they SUHD line of TVs that are designed to offer a degree of future-proofing in line with the proposed standards for UHD broadcast and UHD Blu-ray. To achieve this the JS9000 uses edge LED back lighting and Nano Crystal technology, which has a wider colour space that is 92% of the DCI standard. The JS9000 also uses more efficient LEDs and a newer brighter panel that allows it to support High Dynamic Range (HDR) and 10-bit video. The JS9000 range sits just below Samsung's flagship JS9500 but the only real difference is that the latter uses a direct LED array for the backlight. In addition to the UE55JS9000, there is also the UE65JS9000 and UE48JS9000 in the range.
This is a preview of the upcoming UE55JS9000 model and will be replaced with the full in-depth review as soon as we have measured and reviewed the final retail sample. In the meantime here is a run down of the features we can expect to see.
JS9000 Picture Quality FeaturesThe UE55JS9000 incorporates all the new picture features found on Samsung's 2015 SUHD range of TVs and uses a curved screen with an edge LED backlight. It supports Ultra HD 4K resolution (3840 x 2160) and includes Octa-Core picture processing. The JS9000 also features Peak Illuminator Pro, which is designed to boost the brightness of the image by taking energy not being used in dark parts of the image and using it to boost the brighter parts. It also includes Precision Black local dimming and Auto Depth Enhancer and we will test all these features fully when the JS9000 comes in for review.
The SUHD line-up is designed to support HDR, 10-bit video and a wider colour space.
The UE55JS9000 uses a new filter on its curved screen that is designed to reduce unwanted reflections and includes extensive calibration controls. There is the Smart LED local dimming feature with settings for Low, Standard and High, along with the Auto Motion Plus feature that can be used to reduce motion blur. Along with Nano Crystal technology, which is Samsung's proprietary version of quantum dot, the 10-bit panel also uses a new LED light source and improved transmittance. The Octa-Core processing adds content orientated picture quality enhancements and quantum colour expression to better map colours to the TV's colour space.
Smart TV and Other SpecsThe UE55JS9000 sports a metallic build with a silver brushed metal finish. It has a chamfered bezel and a silver trim around the outer edge, along with a new curved stand. The JS9000 uses Samsung's One Connect box, which means that there are only two cables going to the TV itself - one for power and the other for the One Connect box. On the box itself are four HDMI 2.0 inputs and three USB ports, along with legacy inputs and a LAN port. The JS9000 also has built-in WiFi and includes all of Samsung's latest Smart TV features.
There is the new platform, powered by Tizen and the Smart Controller motion remote control. Samsung's Smart platform includes all the major catch-up services and streaming content providers, as well a connectivity and Smart Share features. Finally Samsung also include a Game Mode that significantly reduces the input lag for gamers and it supports active shutter 3D, with two pairs of glasses included.
