Raging Bull: 20th Anniversary Special Edition DVD Review
    SRP: £19.99

What a joy this disc is to behold. Despite the claims about DVD being cutting-edge technology designed to make the most of the latest Hollywood blockbusters, nothing looks better on the format than an immaculate black-and-white transfer, with deep areas of shadow and masses of fine detail. Because of this, and the quality of the disc's encoding, Raging Bull is one of the best-looking films available on the format.
It's a spectacular 1.85:1 transfer, only slightly let down by the fact that it isn't presented anamorphically. Still, such is the quality of the image that it really doesn't lose that much when expanded for a 16:9 TV. Majestic.

A pretty active Dolby Pro-Logic mix which throws you straight into the middle of the ring with Jake and has crowds braying at you from the sidelines. Scorsese's usual love of music is evident throughout, and the dialogue has a crisp, resonant tone. Pro-Logic mixes really don't come much better than this.

The first disc is a straight reissue of the original release with just the theatrical trailer, but the second disc contains The Bronx Bull (a 27min documentary featuring interviews with La Motta, editor Thelma Schoonmaker, and various film critics) and 'Jake's Jokes' (a collection of La Motta's favourite stand-up moments). All this is wrapped in a stunning gatefold package also containing a 16-page booklet with details about the production of the film, and a collection of postcards. A truly beautiful package.
Suggested retail price when reviewed: £19.99
