Predator/Predator 2 Double Pack DVD Review
    SRP: £29.99

    Picture

Both movies are presented with anamorphic transfers in their original 1.85:1 ratios. Starting with Predator things look pretty good to begin with thanks to the strong colour palette, relative lack of bleed (even in the alien's point-of-view shots which are predominantly red), detail and shading levels, and enhancing edging. However, the disc does stumble slightly in night sequences which do throw up a fair amount of grain. Predator 2 copes slightly better, offering the same strong transfer levels, but without as much grain in darker scenes. Both transfers are solid affairs, if hardly likely to offer anything truly outstanding.

    Sound

As good as the image quality on both discs is, it doesn't even compare to the quality of the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio remixes each of the films has benefited from. The first film offers enhanced clarity and plenty of surround effects (the highlight being the amount of bass pumped out by the gunfire in Chapter 12), while the second movie overwhelms your senses with a non-stop barrage of shoot-outs, explosions, and rather messy alien encounters. The only downside is that neither of the movies include the slightly superior DTS mixes included on the recent US re-releases.

    Extras

Sadly, each films is accompanied only by the original trailer. The bargain price of the double-pack is some consolation, but we're left hoping that both movies will eventually be given the same extra-packed Five Star Special Edition treatment the Die Hard movies are scheduled to receive later in the year. Meanwhile, roll on the rumoured Alien vs Predator movie...

    Verdict

Two great action offerings in a bargain double-pack, let down by an almost complete lack of extras
