Pinky and the Brain Review
They're Pinky and the Brain, yes Pinky and the Brain
One is a genius, The other's insane
They're laboratory mice, Their genes have been spliced
They're Pinky and the Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain
As much as I love all kinds of movies and TV shows, from Se7en to The Crow, from Prison Break to 24, I have 3 kids shows I hold dearly, so much so, that I still love them to bits today. One is The Muppet Show, one is Dangermouse and the other is Pinky and the Brain. I have 2 large figurines of these extraordinary mice frequenting my home, a Pinky and the Brain cookie jar, a limited marble statue and .......... You get the point - I like them.
The characters themselves weren't unleashed to the world in this show, rather they were part of the Animaniacs (which also has just had a DVD release), but they grew so popular that a spin off wasn't far away. The show itself revolves around a simple premise, which is the punchline to every episode “What are we going to do tomorrow night Brain” “Same thing we do every night Pinky. Try to take over the world”. Yes, Brain is a megalomaniac of the highest order and his plans and relentlessness would shame Wile E. Coyote. Pinky, his lab cage roommate, is the complete opposite of the Brain - somewhat dippy, stupid or plain nuts. Each plan for world domination is a feat in itself and always gets sooooo close to completion, until Pinky usually does something to ruin it (even if he is literally following Brain's orders).
Before each night is done, Their plan will be unfurled
By the dawning of the sun, They'll take over the world.
Although the format is formulaic, the episodes are fresh and fun. Occasionally, there's an episode that doesn't match the format (the one where Brain realises the mice he's captured his parents, for example) but even then, it fits within the boundaries of the show, in the example he wanted to capture 2 normal mice as they were integral to his plan for global domination. The only problem with the set here is it's 22 episodes which encompass all of Season 1 and all bar 3 episodes of Season 2, which is a shame that they couldn't have just added them to give a more complete set. Still, it gives me hope that we'll get them and all of Season 3 and 4 in the second volume.
So, other than that minor issue, is there anything to not like here? Well, no. This is Pinky and the Brain - no Elmyra in sight, thankfully (and for those who don't know, consider yourselves lucky). This isn't really a kids show, like Animaniacs, it has plenty of references and gags that kids won't get - for example, the obvious parallels between the Brain and Orson Wells. It is however, very funny, with plenty of quotable lines, such as the famous AYPWIP's (Are You Pondering What I'm Pondering) lines “I think so Brain, but if they called them Sad Meals, kids wouldn't buy them” or “I think so Brain, but burlaps chafe me so.” It also has plenty of satire and zaniness, so it appeals to the young as well as the old (like me). It's a shame that it got cancelled and it's even worse with Elmyra, but here's the first 22 episodes with, hopefully, the rest of this superb series will follow very, very soon.
They're Pinky and The Brain. Yes, Pinky and The Brain
Their twilight campaign, Is easy to explain.
To prove their mousey worth. They'll overthrow the Earth
They're dinky, They're Pinky and The Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, NARF!
