Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief Blu-ray Review
'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' comes to Region B locked Blu-ray with a very good looking 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 transfer that is framed in the widescreen 2.40:1 aspect ratio.
There's a particularly healthy colour palette with a strength that allows things to jump off the screen at you. I particularly recall the colour of Annabeth's eyes and some bright flames in several scenes. Skin tones look fine in the Hollywood tan tradition and in dark scenes, the blacks are deep enough to suit the harshest critic. Contrast is excellent throughout and the image is sharp, allowing a high level of fine detail to be displayed. Particularly, the armour worn by training camp inmates stood out in terms of texture, while forest landscapes surrounding the camp looked impressive.
The sharp eye of the HD transfer did pick out a few areas of CGI and gave the game away (called a 'suss job' in the effects world). The scene with the Fury early on in the movie springs to mind here. In the old days (ie 10 years ago) they'd have made it a bit darker or injected some smoke to help with the illusion.
Overall though, this is a stonkingly good transfer.
I can sum up the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track on 'Percy Jacko' in one word - 'Wow!' If you want something to show off just how good surround sound can be, then this is the one for you.
It's all about the use of the surrounds here as it provides an immersive experience. The use of LFE is very effective in producing a very satisfying rumble for many scenes, but it's not so heavy as to make you feel that you're being kicked in the forehead. Fireballs whoosh around the soundfield in some scenes, making you want to duck, so effective is the panning from front to rear.
Despite the predominant sound effects, the dialogue is still very clean and crisp.
It's an impressive mix that I'm sure will be appearing at demo rooms throughout the country.
'Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief' comes as a 2 disc set, with disc 1 containing the movie and Extras while disc 2 contains the Digital Copy.
- Deleted Scenes (HD, 11 mins)
There are 8 deleted scenes in all. Most of them are extensions of scenes from the final movie. As usual, you can see why they were cut as they only slow down the pace without contributing to the storyline.

- Discover Your Powers Quiz
A trivia quiz where you can answer a series of questions to find out which god you may be descended from.
- Inside Camp Half Blood (HD, 5 mins)
The cast and crew explain the purpose behind Camp Half Blood with on-set footage. We hear about the stunt training for the stars so they could take part in the Summer camp for Demigods. Production design is touched upon with the combination of various influences to arrive at the final design.
- On Set with Brandon T Jackson (HD, 6 mins)
The talkative young actor hosts this short promo piece as we follow him from his hotel to the set via New York traffic jams. We get to see the inside of his trailer and meet the other stars of the film who are his 'best buddies'. He can't believe how lucky he is.
- Meet the Demigods (HD, 4 mins)
Here we have a feature that uses clips from the movie to introduce us to the Demigods while we also receive more background information on each one.
Greek mythology meets modern day America as 'Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief' arrives on Region B locked Blu-ray with an excellent 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 transfer framed at 2.40:1. Good strong colours combine with a sharp, detailed image to provide us with a very pleasing looking picture.
The DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround track is no slouch either with a very immersive, demo quality sound that majors on impressive steering while maximizing the benefits obtained from the subwoofer to provide wonderful rumbling bass.
A fairly light smattering of bonus material educates us on Greek mythology and we also get a tour of the set.
As a movie, it's great all round family entertainment as Demigod Percy has only 14 days to save the world from a war between the Athenians. Good fun.
