    Mystic River DVD Review
    SRP: £27.99

    Picture

Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen this single disc edition handles the image very well with only a few small problems seen. The contrast of the image is over exposed to create a gritty feel with intentional grain seen throughout; colours are also over saturated and muted which suits the source material. The print is clean enough with no signs of dirt or scratches and the image looks sharp most of the time with good detail. The running time, however, does effect the compression of the movie with some of the darker scenes suffering from blocking effects and mpeg artefacts; this is more noticeable on large displays. Overall the image is above average and you can forgive the slight compression problems.

    Sound

The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is dynamic with excellent dialogue reproduction. Surrounds are rarely used but kick in now and again to reinforce on screen events and the LFE channel is tight and refined with nothing to strain your subwoofer. Overall the soundmix is understated yet provides everything needed to bring the drama to life.

    Extras

Our review copy is the standard single disc edition which contains the movie only. There is a more expensive double disc edition available which also features Clint Eastwood's score on a separate CD.

    Verdict

Mystic River is a serious, depressing and honest thriller with stunning performances and excellent direction. Disc presentation is good and I heartily recommend this as a keeper.
