'Picture-on-Glass' all the way down and an invisible soundbar

  • LG have given their E series a make-over and although the stand remains familiar, the 'Picture-on-Glass' design now goes all the way to the bottom and the built-in 2.2-channel soundbar is almost invisible. As with all of LG's OLED TVs this year, the E8 support Dolby Atmos. The resulting TV is not only an attractively designed TV but, thanks to the inclusion of the new Alpha 9 processor, the E8V offers superior picture processing and image accuracy. The E8 comes in the 65-inch 65E8V version previewed here and also a smaller 55-inch 55E8V models as well.

The smart platform on the E8 is still based around the superb WebOS 3.0 operating system and Magic Motion remote but for 2018, LG have also added their new ThinQ AI system. This feature enables the TV to both integrate with other internet devices and provide voice control via third party devices that use Google, Siri and Alexa.

One of the big additions for 2018 is the Alpha 9 processor that adds a host of new features to the E8, including improved motion handling, black frame insertion, a de-contouring feature and Active HDR that analyses static HDR10 content and essentially adds dynamic metadata. The E8V also supports most forms of High Dynamic Range, including HDR10, Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG), Dolby Vision and Technicolor HDR. In addition, the E8 can also support High Frame Rate (HFR) content although, since it does not have HDMI 2.1 connections, it can't handle HFR over HDMI.

For those who want their OLED TV as accurate as possible, LG's new AutoCal feature will deliver highly accurate images in minutes. This feature was developed in conjunction with Portrait Display's CalMAN calibration software and allows professional calibrators direct access to the Alpha 9 processor. As a result the auto calibration feature can quickly and effectively calibrate the E8 to a professional level of accuracy with 33x33x33 3D look up tables.

Thanks to its comprehensive set of features combined with an attractive design and impressive level of picture quality, the 65E8V will undoubtedly prove popular with enthusiasts.
