Jaws : Anniversary Edition DVD Review
    SRP: £19.99

    Picture

Jaws is a beautiful-looking film, Spielberg's direction and stunning use of hand-held camera providing incredible compositions. It would have been a crime if this disc featured an image that was less than perfect, so all praise to the encoding team for this miraculous anamorphic 2.35:1 transfer which restores the life and palette which was so sorely missed on the VHS releases. Take a look at the detail and perfectly balanced colours in evidence while Brody is 'chumming' at the start of Chapter 14 if you want proof.

    Sound

Regardless of the fact that the film has been given a Dolby Digital 5.1 remix, Jaws was never going to be the most impressive disc on the market. Still, every subtle touch applied by the new mix adds furthers layers to this masterpiece. An example of this can be found in the lead up to Chrissie's death in Chapter 2, where the sound of the waves lapping the shore surrounds you, and the buoy's bell rings in the distance. On top of this you have the superb reworking of the famous theme, with the strings rising up from behind you and making the hairs on the back of your neck stand to attention.

    Extras

Beyond the eerie main menu, there's a 50min Making Of... documentary, and while it is maybe about half the length it originally was on the LaserDisc release, it still provides plenty of information about the film's turbulent production history. In addition to this there are also 10 deleted scenes, two outtakes, three trailers, production notes, a trivia game, a text document providing information about sharks, a screen saver, limited talent profiles, and a gallery containing in excess of 700 storyboards, pieces of production artwork, and photographs.
