Hot Tub Time Machine Blu-ray Review
    SRP: £20.99

‘Hot Tub Time Machine’ materialises on Region free UK Blu-ray with a colourful 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 transfer framed in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Our eyes are treated to deeply saturated colours with skin tones taking on a resultantly orange/brown appearance that makes the film look warm (or should that read lukewarm?). Contrast looks as if it has been deliberately wound up to help push the colour saturation. The image is sharp throughout with a decent level of detail on display. Black levels aren’t quite as deep as they could be but there’s nothing there to really offend the eye. There’s some noticeable grain in the background, probably due to the contrast being lifted but overall this is an acceptable transfer with rich colour.

    Hot Tub Time Machine Picture

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound mix on ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’ is somewhat surprising in its depth and expanse. There is a good deal of deep base in the music used in the film, so your subwoofer gets some exercise, and there are a decent number of discrete surround effects involving the time travel elements of the movie which are pretty impressive. Dialogue has been well recorded and is locked to the centre channel, although it doesn’t make the jokes any funnier. All of the period 1980’s tunes sound as big as ever, with songs from Public Enemy, INXS, New Order, Talking Heads and more.

    Hot Tub Time Machine Sound

‘Hot Tub Time Machine’ comes in a 2 disc package, with the movie and extras on disc 1, while disc 2 contains a digital copy of the extended version. The Blu-ray disc contains both the theatrical and extended versions of the movie. This review was based on the extended version which contains about 90 seconds more material than the theatrical release. The extras are as follows:

Deleted scenes (HD, 12 mins) - Here we have 9 scenes strung together for your delectation. Most are merely extensions of scenes used in the movie, but some are alternate takes such as Lou’s remarks upon seeing Nick’s ‘member’ in close up.

Theatrical trailer (HD, 2 mins 30s) - It looks like fun, fun, fun. Reminds me of a phrase involving silk purses and sow’s ears.

Theatrical Promo Spots (HD, total 6 mins 30s) - These four glorified Cinema trailers have the leading actors discussing their roles in the movie. The cast and Chevy Chase talk about his role as well as his comic 'legend.' Costume designer Dayna Pink explains her choices for the 1980s section of the film. Crispin Glover, the one armed Bellhop, tells us about his running gag in the film.

    Hot Tub Time Machine Extras

‘Hot Tub Time Machine’ is available on UK Region free Blu-ray with a good looking 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 transfer framed in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio. A warm colour scheme, strong contrast and sharp image make this pleasing to the eye. The DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround track makes a good playground for the 1980’s music while the centre weighted dialogue ensures you catch all the gags, such as they are. Both the theatrical and extended version of the movie are included on the Blu-ray, while extras are made up of deleted scenes and bite sized promo pieces. The movie, about four friends transported back through time to 1986 by an errant hot tub might appeal to fans of American ‘gross out’ humour. Others might prefer to watch something else.
