Hedwig And The Angry Inch DVD Review
    SRP: £19.99

    Picture

Hedwig is one gorgeous looking film, full of velvet blacks and a palette that veers from golden yellows to deep green. So, it would be pretty obvious if the transfer on this DVD wasn't up to scratch. Thankfully it is. The disc boasts a superior anamorphic 1.85:1 transfer that manages to hold the tricky colour palette together perfectly without any bleed, and also manages to bring up some detailing within the blacks. Things aren't perfect as there is some fine grain in the print, but this shouldn't really put you off.

    Sound

Entertainment in Video has rapidly become the premiere UK supplier when it comes to audio options on DVD. And while Hedwig might miss out on the 6.1 mixes which have featured on some of the company's other titles, it does boast Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS soundtracks. There's actually very little to call between the two mixes, as there isn't the greatest use of the surrounds we've ever come across, but the DTS does sound a bit more open around the rears when they are employed. Still, the most important thing here is the dialogue and music and both of these aspects of the mix are treated magnificently on both tracks.

    Extras

A queer-punk musical? Well, you wouldn't really think that this is the sort of title that people would go to town with on supplementary features - how wrong you'd be. Hedwig features a variety of very interesting extras which round out this great DVD package in perfect style. First up is a very informative, if occasionally tech heavy, feature-length commentary by John Cameron Mitchell and director of photography Frank G DeMarco; then there's a pair of deleted scenes with optional commentary; the theatrical trailer; a direct song access menu, and cast and crew filmographies.

    Verdict

A brilliant, beautiful film that deserves to reach the widest audience, thanks to this disc it just might manage it.
