Fifth Element, The: Superbit Edition DVD Review
    SRP: £27.98

    Picture

The original R1 transfer was very good indeed, so what difference can this high bit rate transfer make? Well the 2.35:1 Anamorphic Transfer is stunning in it's detail and overall appearance. There are no digital artefacts present in the image such as edge enhancement or dirt and grain, instead the image is sharp and highly detailed. The old transfer was very detailed itself, but this edition just seems to ooze more of the finer stuff out, which looks fantastic on our review screen. Colours are strong with solid blacks and very natural flesh tones and all in all this just looks fantastic.

    Sound

The only real difference to the last edition of this movie is the dts soundtrack which is very strongly presented and sounds very good indeed. It would appear at first that the bass levels drop on the dts track, but what we are getting is actually a tighter bass line which actually goes deeper than the Dolby track, but on first listening the Dolby track appears fully blown which is just not the case, it is the dts track showing how woolly and overblown the bass mix is on the dolby track. But it's not all in the dts tracks favour as at times the high end can feel a little raspy, but overall the dts track just pips the Dolby track to the post by being that little more open and clearer.

    Verdict

The film is brilliant fun and the picture and sound presentation here is first class.
