Devo Live DVD Review
PictureThe picture is actually not bad at all. Fair enough you aren't going to get stellar post production but, considering the venue and the kind of product being offered, there really isn't much to complain about. I could say the crowd shots lack ultimate detail, being slightly blurred, and contrasts have that “daz bright” video feel to them, but this would be to undermine a pretty good effort.
SoundThis is where things start to fall apart. You would expect a music DVD to have an emphasis on sound quality, yes? In the case of DEVO Live, this is not the case. The DD5.1 track is actually worse than a stereo derived PLII Music one and considerably quieter (~5db). The DD track is recessed and murky, vocals often obfuscated by unwanted ancillary sounds. Switch to PLII and you loose some rear speaker information, granted, but the meat of the music is brought more into focus. Drums have bite, bass is present if woolly and the synths have that analogue feel to them. Still, neither option is truly acceptable, which for a music DVD, is some oversight.
ExtrasThis is easy as there are no extras on this disc. There is supposed to be some different angles you can choose on selected tracks, but I could not differentiate which were which. Either each angle was so similar to be next to pointless, or the angle feature didn't work at all. Very poor.
VerdictAccording to the press release, this is supposed to be the second disc in a two disc set, but the first disc was not present. This is a shame as some outstanding video clips, as an intro to the concert proper starting, allude to some serious imaginative work. This review must concentrate on the second disc, and as such, DEVO Live represents a by the numbers concert disc let down by poor sound quality. There really isn't any content to differentiate this from any number of other vanilla discs out there and so this disc gets an appropriately average score, plus one for picture and imagination.
