The not immediately obvious matching of Jim Carrey, Morgan Freeman and Jennifer Aniston, would I mused, require something seriously special in the scriptwriting/screenplay department. Bruce Almighty, directed by Tom Shadyac (who's earlier works include Pet Detective, Liar Liar and The Nutty Professor), is a straight down the line, uncomplicated comedy.
Jim Carrey takes the lead as Bruce - a happy go lucky roving reporter for a local T.V station. Becoming increasingly dissatisfied with "his lot" as disappointment and misfortune befall him, Bruce finally cracks, blaming God above for all his troubles and woes.
Aware of Bruce's descent into constant blasphemy, God, in the more earthly form of Morgan Freeman, endows Bruce with all his mighty powers in a "let's see if you can do any better" proposal. Cue the trademark physical comedy that is Jim Carrey.
In truth Bruce Almighty is not a bad film. JC does what JC does best, which involves some well placed one liner's and plenty of involuntary muscle spasms et al. Jennifer Aniston is by no means out of sorts as Bruce's long time girlfriend, although Morgan Freeman I felt, didn't look too overly sure about it all.
There are a couple of laugh out loud moments and it all moves along at a good pace given it's 101 minute running time.
