    Picture

Considering that so much attention is paid to costumes and sets, it's pleasing that the picture does them full justice. Amadeus is presented in anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen, and it's wonderfully crisp, with vivid, deep colours - all credit to a stunning source print.

    Sound

You would imagine that a film such as this, being full of classical music and benefiting from a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, would sound fantastic. Somehow, though, it falls short, with a hollow soundtrack that doesn't make the most of the music or the ambient effects. Dialogue is clear but nothing stands out. Shame, really.

    Extras

This comes as a double DVD pack, so you would expect a host of extras, and the quantity won't disappoint. The star is a 37-minute Making of... , and that is the only thing that really shines. Other features include a commentary by Forman and Shaffer, a trailer, cast and crew list and a list of awards. The lists are fairly uninspiring and seem only to have been included to fill up space on the second disc, adding to the general disappointment of the film's conversion to DVD.

    Verdict

An excellent film, deserving its garlands, but sadly, its transition to DVD has failed to fully impress us.
