PictureThis second season of the Adventures of Superman sees the episodes presented in their original black and white 1.33:1 full-screen non-anamorphically enhanced format. Detail is remarkably good (mainly thanks to the fact that it is monochrome), with mild softness, no grain and no edge enhancement. The monochrome format obviously restricts the palette somewhat, but at least blacks are relatively solid. Of course, considering the age of the production, print damage is only expected - and there is plenty - but it seldom interferes with your viewing pleasure.
SoundAgain, nothing special here, as this second series remains in its original sound format, with merely Dolby Digital mono tracks for the episodes. Needless to say, this restricts everything to basically one channel, with dialogue (which is nevertheless clear), the slightly grating score and the minimal effects all coming through it. At least the dialogue never gets engulfed by the rest of the track, but other than that there is simply nothing more positive to say about it. I guess it's only expected considering how old the production is.
ExtrasIn the way of extras, we get Audio Commentaries on two key episodes by stars Noel Neill (Lois Lane) and Jack Larson (Jimmy Olsen), a Documentary entitled The First Lady of Metropolis profiling Noel Neil and her character of Lois Lane and featuring interview segments with her, Jack Larson and film expert Leonard Maltin and a special episode entitled Stamp Day for Superman, promoting savings bonds and featuring an introduction by Jack Larson.
VerdictThe Complete Second Season of the Adventures of Superman provides yet more exploits of the Man of Steel, some fun and some frivolous. The video and audio presentations are expectedly dated and the extras nicely round off the disc, making it a worthy purchase for fans of the series and an interesting rental for those who follow the colourful superhero.
