PicturePresented in 2.35:1 Anamorphic widescreen the print and transfer is a little disappointing for a New Line title. The image looks sharp and clean for the majority of the films length, but the darker scenes suffer quite badly from poor shadow detail which makes them hard to follow. Edge enhancement also rears its ugly head during a few scenes making it seen even on smaller displays, creating halos for all to see. Apart from these problems which are only seen now and again the rest of the print is clean and detailed with everything looking sharp in most instances. Colours are strong and well saturated with skin tones looking natural throughout. Not great by any means but acceptable and not overly distracting.
SoundThe soundtrack presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 (448kbps) has one major flaw, it would appear that some scenes suffer from a poor centre dialogue track. I found it difficult to follow some of the dialogue which had a smeared sound to it, the left and right channels also tended to drown out the speech in some scenes. Turning the volume up during these scenes didn't solve the problem as the speech was still smeared just louder. This I fear is down to a poor audio master used for this DVD production. This problem only affects two or three scenes, but these are important scenes for the plot and I had to listen to the scene two or three times to pick up what was being said! Other than that problem the rest of the soundtrack is lively with excellent bass extension and aggressive surrounds during the various shoot outs. Unfortunately I can't ignore the serious dialogue problem and this is a shame for a New Line presentation.
ExtrasHas New Line lost the plot lately? I don't think so; recent titles like Lord of The Rings have demonstrated what an excellent producer they are, so I can only say that it must have been the director and poor master material which makes this disc look half hearted. The only extras provided are 7 deleted scenes and a trailer! The deleted scenes don't add much to the story but are interesting enough to watch one. Disappointing overall.
VerdictThe film is entertaining with Vin Diesel proving he is not that bad an actor, but the disc has a few flaws too many.
