Updated 30-Jun-2022 Apple TV+: Surface Limited Season (29th Jul; new)

There’s a noticeable breather in July for Disney+ as it rests its thoroughbred Marvel, Star Wars and Pixel properties, allowing Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ms. Marvel to play out before kicking things back off again with She Hulk and Andor in August. However, those desperate for a Star Wars fix will be pleased to see the arrival of Light & Magic, a documentary series about the legendary VFX outfit put together by George Lucas to realise his vision of a galaxy far, far away which went on to become a Hollywood powerhouse.

Filling the ‘A-game’ void, there’s the return of family friendly fare with Zombies and HSMTMTS (that’s High School Musical: The Musical - The Series to you grandpa - sheesh, don’t you know anything?!) both cropping up for their third outings. Meanwhile things take a more sobering turn with award winning animated documentaries Waltz with Bashir and the recent Flee, while Under the Banner of Heaven is a true crime drama series with a decent name cast headed by Andrew Garfield.

Amazon will be hoping for Reacher style success with new, ex-military-man-on-a-mission series Terminal List with Chris Pratt very much in damaged - and damaging - mode. James May pops back up as his fufils his Amazon contract quota and reminds us all that Italy is a very nice place to visit, and new sci-fi series Paper Girls will hopefully hit the headlines as a worthwhile watch.

Finally, after a few years of lending his voice to animated projects during lockdown post Rocketman, Taron Egerton returns to live action in the hard hitting prison drama series, Black Bird on Apple TV+.

Whether you loved the movies or found them distractingly inaccurate when it came to the casting of the lead character, Amazon's Reacher stays a lot more faithful to the books, adapting the first - The Killing Floor - into a worthy season 1.

The film took four years to complete and uses an animation technique often confused with rotoscoping (as seen in Richard Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly) but is actually a combination of Adobe Flash cutouts painstakingly moved and photographed, alongside with more classic animation techniques.

At the 81st Oscar ceremony, Waltz with Bashir became the first animated film to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. The title refers to Lebanese militia commander Bashir Gemayel who later became president of Lebanon.
