There’s a good chance that most Spider-Man fans have already seen No Way Home, the 2021 MCU blockbuster which saw a large-scale reversal of fortunes for movie theatres after a dreadfully lean couple of years following the Covid pandemic. But for Sky Cinema subscribers or NOW streamers that haven’t caught up with the third film of Jon Watt’s Spider-Man ‘Home’ trilogy starring Tom Holland, the opportunity now arrives in July as part of the handful of new films to premiere on the services. The timing couldn't be better either as Disney+ will be streaming the latest Doctor Strange movie which picks up the multiverse baton and runs with it, so Marvel fans should be right up to date as Thor: Love and Thunder hits cinemas in a few weeks time.

Sky Original animated film, Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank with its starry voice cast including Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Cera, Mel Brooks, George Takei, Djimon Hounsou and Michelle Yeoh, will get a theatrical release in the US but comes straight to Sky Cinema in the UK. Meanwhile, Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter is a Sky movie debut worth keeping an eye on for another typically intense tale of past deeds and present redemption.

As far as Sky original series go, raising kids seems to be the order of the day with Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard returning in season three of Breeders as parents Paul and Ally whose daily family life lurches along with relatably gripping and hilarious turns of events - kind of like Carla Lane’s Butterflies on steroids. There’s also The Baby, which might just be the very last thing that any pregnant viewers want to watch.

The usual brace of US procedurals come to Sky mainly revolving around various branches of the FBI, though medical drama New Amsterdam is also returning for season 4.

And the entirely appropriate William Shatner hosts UnXplained on Sky History, as some of the most puzzling mysteries on (and off) Earth are examined.

Update 16-Jun-2022:
Also of note is a revamping of the SyFy Channel which will become Sky Sci-Fi from 26th July and continues the rebranding exercise that commenced last year and saw the introduction of the Sky Max and Showcase channels, as well as the loss of Sky One. To celebrate this launch, two new series will be added during launch week, Day of the Dead and SurrealEstate as well as a number of movie titles including Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Here’s a closer look at the best on offer in July.

Note: This is an early preview, so content is liable to Sky’s schedule tinkering and few air dates have been confirmed yet. We’ll update the article with new information as it becomes available so please check back on a regular basis and watch the comments section for notification updates.

Cry Macho (2021, Drama, Cert: 12. Clint Eastwood, Dwight Yoakam, Eduardo Minett, Fernanda Urrejola, Dir. Clint Eastwood)

It’s 1979 and ageing Mike Milo, a one-time rodeo star forced to quit after a severe back injury, takes a job from ex-boss Howard Polk to bring Howard’s young son Rafo back from Mexico and away from his alcoholic mother. To keep under the radar, the pair take the backroads on their way home to Texas, facing an unexpectedly wild ride, during which the world-weary former horseman finds unexpected connections and a sense of much sought after redemption by teaching the boy what it means to be a good man.

This long gestating project (aren’t they all?) is a neo-Western based on the screenplay by Nick Schenk (who also had a hand in writing Eastwood’s Gran Torino and The Mule projects), plus the late N. Richard Nash, who wrote the novel back in 1975 after his original script failed to sell. Sitting with producer Albert S. Ruddy for decades, Eastwood was originally offered the project in 1988 but declined. Many other actors have been associated with it over the years, including Robert Mitchum, Burt Lancaster, Arnold Schwareznegger, Pierce Brosnan and even Roy Scheider, who began filming it in 1991 before it was abandoned.

As a meditation of what it means to be a man and how that changes with age, it will be interesting to see if it ends up being Hollywood legend Eastwood’s swan song.
