What's new on UK streaming services for August 2022

If it streams… we can kill it!

by Andy Bassett

With the recent news that drought-like conditions could be on the way to the UK for the rest of the summer, we roll around to the August streaming schedule to take a look at what’s coming to the UK services and ascertain whether original streaming content is in danger of drying up too.

Update 27-Jul-2022 Amazon Prime Video: Samaritan (26th Aug; new)

Update 01-Aug-2022 Amazon Prime Video: Strange But True (05th Aug; new Amazon Freevee) - Moonfall (12th Aug; new) - Memory (19th Aug; new) - Dog (21st Aug; new) - Tomb Raider 2018 (23rd Aug; new) - Licorice Pizza (26th Aug; new)

Update 01-Aug-2022 Apple TV+: Bad Sisters S1 (19th Aug; new)

Update 02-Aug-2022 Disney+: Andor S1 (removed and rescheduled to 21st Sep)

Update 04-Aug-2022 Disney+: She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (rescheduled to 18th Aug)

Things are looking good as it happens and Disney+ is right out of the gate with offerings from three of its flagship franchises, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars: all get new releases, starting with Lightyear, a slightly convoluted way of granting everyone’s favourite Pixar Space Ranger action figure a back story of sorts, and not even 2 months on from its theatrical bow.

Next up there’s Marvel’s next MCU TV show and we’re introduced to another new character after the recent Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel, with She-Hulk now starring in a brand new show. Popular among comic fans, Jennifer Walters’ superhero alter ego may be unfamiliar with casual Marvel viewers but the presence of Smart Hulk and Wong will cushion folk’s introduction to yet another new character. And she could be important as a future member of The Avengers now that the Phase 5 and 6 plans have recently been unveiled, revealing two new Avenger movies due in 2025 - The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.

Moon Knight (Disney+) Season 1 Premiere TV Show Review

by Tom Davies ·
With Moon Knight arriving on Disney+ Marvel tries something a little different, venturing a ways down the horror-comedy route, but getting off to a rather inauspicious start.

The next big gun from Disney+ plays in the Star Wars sandpit and is the Covid-delayed Andor which sees the return of Diego Luna’s Rebellion spy Cassian Andor in the first season of a prequel series set 5 years before his pivotal actions in Rogue One (Note: Andor S1 has now been rescheduled for 21st Sep).

But Disney isn’t finished yet for August and dips into its Fox IP well to deliver Prey, a new film which returns viewers to the Predator universe in a story set three hundred years before Dutch and his team had ever laid eyes on the “ugly mutha****er.”

Moving onto Apple TV+ and the third and final season of one of its original launch series, See, returns to wrap up the story of a sightless post-apocalyptic society, while Skydance Animations’ feature-length Luck dabbles in a Pixar style concept and execution thanks to John Lasseter’s producing hand.

Finally, with Amazon’s recent Prime subscription increase still smarting perhaps director Ron Howard’s latest film, Thirteen Lives, about the miraculous Thai cave rescue of twelve trapped youngsters and their football coach plus the return of Star Trek: Lower Decks for a third season will help soothe the sting.

As ever, although we’ve tried to be as UK specific as possible, streaming dates can change, content can sometimes be territory specific and shows can even get pulled or added at the very last minute by the streamers themselves as they sort out scheduling or licensing issues.

We’ll keep updating the article as new content gets announced, so please check back.

3rd August (Wednesday)

Disney+ and Star Originals:

Lightyear (2022, Animation, Action, Adventure, Cert: PG. Voices: Chris Evans, Keke Palmer, Taika Waititi, Dale Soules, Bill Hader Dir. Angus MacLane)

In the Toy Story universe, Lightyear is the Sci-Fi movie that led to Andy wanting a Buzz Lightyear action figure, that ultimately led to; “Hey, a laser! How come *you* don't have a laser, Woody?”

Legendary Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear is marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew. As Buzz tries to find a way back home through space and time, he’s joined by a group of ambitious recruits and his adorable robot companion cat, Sox. However, the arrival of Zurg, an imposing alien with a mysterious agenda who commands an army of ruthless robots, complicates the mission to get home.

Lightyear is the first of Pixar’s projects to get a theatrical release since Toy Story 4 in 2019, with Onward, Soul, Luca and Turning Red all debuting on Disney+. However, Lightyear’s Box Office performance was underwhelming to the point of it being classed a dud and it now hits Disney’s streamer less than 50 days after its June 17th theatrical bow.

Prey (2022, Action, Drama Sci-Fi, Cert: 15, Amber Midthunder, Harlan Blayne Kytwayhat, Dakota Beavers, Dane DiLiegro, Dir. Dan Trachtenberg)

In the Comanche Nation in 1719, a fierce and highly skilled warrior named Naru is determined to show that she is just as adept a warrior as her tribesmen, having been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters of the Great Plains. So when danger threatens her camp, she promises to protect the tribe and begins to track her adversary. Naru soon learns though that the prey she is stalking is a highly evolved warrior from the stars with a technologically advanced arsenal. And as the two foes head towards a deadly showdown it’s no longer certain who’s the hunter and who's the hunted.

Prey is directed by 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Boys helmer Dan Trachtenberg and is the fifth instalment in the Predator franchise though it serves as a prequel to all the other entries. It was shot in English and Comanche languages with both options available on Hulu, and presumably Disney+ will provide a similar choice.

5th August (Friday)

Thirteen Lives (2022, Drama, Thriller, True Events, Cert: 12A. Amazon Prime Original Film. Colin Farrell, Joel Edgerton, Viggo Mortensen, Tom Bateman, Dir. Ron Howard.)

In a retelling of the true story that played out on 24 hour news channels around the world in 2018, twelve boys and the coach of a Thai soccer team become entombed underground while exploring a cave system when an unexpected rainstorm traps them in a chamber inside the mountain. Buried behind a maze of flooded cave tunnels, they face impossible odds. A desperate rescue is launched with a team of world-class divers navigating through miles of dangerous cave networks to discover that finding the boys is only the beginning and getting everyone out alive will require coordination and cooperation on a massive scale.

Having so successfully delivered a similar true tale of rescue against seemingly insurmountable odds with Apollo 13, expect assured director Ron Howard to bring the same white knuckle, nausea inducing tension to this thankfully successful story of human determination, ingenuity and bravery.

Produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Thirteen Lives comes to Prime Video after a theatrical release on 29th July 2022, courtesy of Amazon's acquisition of MGM in May 2021.

Initially viewed with skepticism, the newly employed female players fight to keep the league alive as they battle through close games, injuries, sexual awakenings and road trips across a rapidly changing U.S.

Based on the beloved 1992 Penny Marshall film of the same name (itself an entry in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant") A League of Their Own is not to be confused with Jamie Redknapp, Freddie Flintoff and Ramesh Ranganathan pratting about over on Sky Max!
