What's new on Netflix UK for June 2021

Staying Awake for Netflix

by Andy Bassett

After May’s live action excess of Army of the Dead, the mystery of The Woman in the Window and the slow burn dread of Oxygen, two of Netflix’s more prominent new movies for June are both of the animated variety.

Sony’s Wish Dragon continues a run of 2021 dragon movies (including Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon and Sky Original Dragon Rider), while America: The Motion Picture looks like it could be treading similar R-rated territory to Team America: World Police in its self deprecating tone.

Meanwhile Awake is June’s world-suffers-an-apocalyptic-event movie romp (‘cos we need those on a regular basis right!?) and Kevin Hart goes in for some serious acting chops in Fatherhood

On the TV show front there’s even more post apocalyptic shenanigans in Sweet Tooth from producer Robert Downey Jr. T

There’s a possibility that US sitcom titan Seinfeld could be hitting the service this month. This is very much a watch this space situation as there’s no official word yet but the cost to Netflix must have been huge (it cost Hulu $160 million for the full 180 episode, nine season set back in 2015) so it’s likely the company will want it out to as many territories as possible to get its money’s worth now that it holds the rights.

As ever, there’s also the usual mix of international movies and series, reality shows, kids programmes and documentaries, so there should be something for most viewers.

So, let’s take a closer look at some of this content coming to Netflix UK in June, bearing in mind that although we’ve tried to be as UK specific as possible, streaming dates can change, content can sometimes be territory specific and shows can even get changed/pulled by Netflix itself.

Make sure you come back as we’ll be updating the article when more films and TV shows get announced.

3rd June

Dancing Queens (2021, Comedy, Drama. International: Sweden. Christopher Wollter, Mattias Nordkvist, Rakel Wärmländer, Dir. Helena Bergström)

23-year-old Dylan Pettersson, a small island girl from the Swedish archipelago, has big dreams of dancing on the mainland. After Dylan lands a cleaning job at Queens, a struggling club, the venue’s star dancer and choreographer discovers her talent. Dylan desperately wants to be a part of the show, but she's a girl - and it's a drag show!

However, where there's a will (and a peppy dance routine), there’s a way.

Ultimately, this is a  feelgood drama about daring to embrace the unpredictable and being open to love and friendship in whatever form it comes… and has nothing to do with Abba!

4th June

After a devastating global event wipes out all the world's electronics and eliminates everyone’s ability to sleep, chaos quickly begins to consume the world. However, Jill, an ex-soldier with a troubled past, may hold the key to a cure in the form of her own daughter. The question is, can Jill safely deliver her daughter to those who can help before sleep deprivation drives her and humanity over the edge.

11th June

Wish Dragon (2021, Animation, Adventure, Comedy. Voices: John Cho, Jimmy Wong, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Constance Wu, Will Yun Lee. Dir. Chris Appelhans)

Din is a working-class college student with big dreams but small means, who discovers Long, a cynical but all-powerful dragon capable of granting wishes. Together they set off on an adventure through modern day Shanghai in pursuit of Din's long-lost childhood friend, Lina. Their journey forces them to examine and answer some of life's biggest questions – because when you can wish for anything, you have to decide what really matters.

The story is "a genie-in-a-bottle retelling set in contemporary China", based on an original story by director Chris Applehans that riffs heavily on Aladdin. Jackie Chan produced the movie and supplied the voice of Long in the Mandarin version which was released in Chinese theatres in January.

18th June

Fatherhood (2021, Comedy, Drama, Kevin Hart, Alfre Woodard, Melody Hurd, Lil Rel Howery, Paul Reiser, Dir. Paul Weitz)

A father brings up his baby girl on his own after the unexpected death of his wife a day after their daughter's birth.

Kevin Hart gets to show off a new side to his persona with the first high profile dramatic role of his career after coming on board the project when original star and producer Channing Tatum left.

Directed by American Pie and About a Boy co-helmer Paul Weitz and based on the 2011 memoir Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss and Love by Matthew Logelin, the feature was originally set for a theatrical release with Columbia Pictures before Netflix acquired the rights to the film to distribute globally, except for China.

Jagame Thandhiram (2021, Action, Comedy, Crime, Netflix Original Film, International: India. Dhanush, Aishwarya Lekshmi, James Cosmo, Dir. Karthik Subbaraj)

Tamil and Telugu language crime-comedy centered around a nomadic gangster who finds himself torn between the forces of good and evil while trying to find a place to call home.

The title translates as ‘The World is Tricky’ and marks the Indian movie debut of veteran Scottish actor James Cosmo who plays a pivotal role - apparently the filmmakers also sent the project to Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. Filming locations included Faversham, Kent plus London and India, and the original release date of May 2020 was obviously impacted by the pandemic-induced shut down of cinemas worldwide. Ultimately, star and producer fell out over plans to release the film on a streaming service but, hey, here we are.

23rd June

Good on Paper (2021, Comedy, Crime, Romance, Netflix Original Film. Iliza Shlesinger, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Matt McGorry, Dir. Kimmy Gatewood, Scr. Iliza Shlesinger )

Her best friend Margot isn’t convinced he’s all he seems and she urges Andrea to embark on a wild goose chase to uncover who Dennis really is.

Based on a mostly true story, Good on Paper is written by and stars Iliza Shlesinger.

30th June

America: The Motion Picture (2021, Animation, Action, Adventure. Voices: Channing Tatum, Simon Pegg, Judy Greer, Jason Mantzoukas, Olivia Munn, Andy Samberg, Dir. Matt Thompson)

A chainsaw-wielding George Washington teams up with beer-loving bro Sam Adams, famed scientist Thomas Edison, acclaimed horseman Paul Revere and a very annoyed Geronimo to take on Benedict Arnold and King James in the American Revolution.

From Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, producers of last month’s The Mitchells vs The Machines, this R-rated animated look back at the history of America was announced all the way back in 2017 and, it’s safe to say, will not necessarily be brimming with historical accuracy.

Trailer NSFW.

Sweet Tooth (2021, S1, Netflix Original Series)

Ten years ago “The Great Crumble” wreaked havoc on the world and led to the mysterious emergence of hybrids - babies born part human, part animal. After a decade of living safely in his secluded forest home, a sheltered hybrid deer-boy named Gus unexpectedly befriends a wandering loner named Jepperd. Together they set out on an extraordinary adventure across what’s left of America in search of answers - about Gus' origins, Jepperd's past, and the true meaning of home. But their story is full of unexpected allies and enemies, and Gus quickly learns the lush, dangerous world outside the forest is more complex than he ever could have imagined.

Based on the DC comic book series by Jeff Lemire, Sweet Tooth is a post-apocalyptic fairytale executive produced by Robert Downey Jr.’s Team Downey. It stars Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie and Will Forte with all eight episodes available to stream on June 4th.

11th June

But with his family in pieces and his back to the wall, Diop’s quest for vengeance after his father’s prison suicide means putting himself in danger.

Starring Omar Sy as the self-styled gentleman thief inspired by literary character Arsène Lupin, the first five episodes of season 1 showed back in January, pulling in viewing figures that propelled it to the top of the Netflix Top Ten lists across numerous countries. In fact, it was watched by 70 million households during its first month, becoming the most-watched non-English series on the streaming platform.

These new episodes were completed during 2020 and in fact form the second half of the first season.

Trailer cut to carefully hide the usual sync issues with English dubs.

Elite explores concepts and themes associated with teen dramas, but also features more progressive issues and other viewpoints to the standard clichés. Structurally, the series employs a flash-forward plot that involves a mystery element, with each season taking place in two timelines.

Production for a 5th season is underway.

Meanwhile, his former partner Toshi has become a yakuza and holds complicated feelings toward Muranishi.

This comedy-drama serves as a Japanese Ying to the HBO series Deuce’s Yang, both examining the adult industry over a similar period and across a huge cultural divide.

Adapted from the biography about him, The Naked Director depicts Muranishi's character, his art, vision and his interactions with the approving and disapproving folk around him.
