Indeed, St. Valentine’s Day itself sees a couple of hot-under-the-collar international TV series hitting the service that will make us all feel somewhat inadequate in the bedroom department as plotlines centre around affairs, infidelity and betrayal. There’s Italy’s Devotion, a Story of Love and Betrayal, Japan’s Fishbowl Wives and elsewhere, Mexico’s Dark Desires hits a second, concluding season. We guess playing away from home is an international pastime!

Meanwhile, Finding Ola and Through My Window demonstrate a little more romance and commitment while Hatchi: A Dog’s Tale leans into the devotion of a pooch for his master. And let’s not forget Jake and Heath sharing an intimate moment or two in Brokeback Mountain and LaKeith Stanfield and Issa Rae falling for each other in The Photograph. Phew, everyone's at it!

Finally, there’s even a cautionary documentary about finding love online with The Tinder Swindler and there are TWO versions of reality show Love is Blind kicking off in February.

Away from the all lovey-dovey stuff, Netflix has an updated version of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre with an older (but we suspect not necessarily nicer) Leatherface up to his old tricks again, and there’s a new take on indie gem Run Lola Run with Indian remake Looop Lapeta looking smartly energetic in a Edgar Wright kind of way.

Talking of updates, Murderville takes Tom Davis’s BBC3 Murder in Successville formula and tweaks it slightly as a vehicle for Will (LEGO Batman) Arnett’s moustache.

And fans of hip-hop and Kanye West can get an intimate glimpse into the rapper and business mogul's career over the last two decades with the start of the three part documentary jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy.

So let’s take a look at what we know so far is coming to Netflix UK in February, bearing in mind that although we’ve tried to be as UK specific as possible, streaming dates can change, content can sometimes be territory specific and shows can even get changed by Netflix itself.

Make sure you come back as we’ll be updating the article when more films and TV shows get announced.

The film premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and was acquired for global distribution by Netflix for all territories except China, Japan and the UK. Having streamed everywhere else in 2019, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind will finally make its debut for UK subscribers on 1st Feb 2022.

Big Bug aka Bigbug (2021, Comedy, Sci-Fi, Netflix Original Film, International: France, Language: French. Dominique Pinon, Elsa Zylberstein, Isabelle Nanty, Youssef Hajdi, Dir. Jean-Pierre Jeunet)

In 2050, artificial intelligence is everywhere and humanity is now completely reliant on it. When the latest Yonyx generation of androids attempts a coup, a group of bickering suburbanites find themselves stuck together after their well meaning domestic robots decide the safest strategy is to lock everyone in the house. While the threat draws closer, the humans take a closer look at each other and the cracks start to show as petty jealousies and grievances surface. As the family members, friends and neighbours start to tear into each other, the robots can only watch on in bewildered amazement, unsure whether the carnage indoors is any better than the chaos outside.

From Alien Resurrection and Amelie director Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

18th February (Friday)

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022, Crime, Horror, Thriller, R, Netflix Original Film. Olwen Fouéré, Sarah Yarkin, Elsie Fisher, Alice Krige, Dir. David Blue Garcia

When a group of idealistic friends land in a remote Texas town to start a business venture, they accidentally disrupt the carefully shielded world of the deranged killer, Leatherface, who’s been in hiding for nearly 50 years. As he returns to his old ways and starts to terrorise the teenagers, the monster’s blood-soaked legacy continues to haunt the area’s residents including Sally Hardesty, a survivor of the original 1974 massacre who’s hell-bent on seeking revenge.

The story was conceived by Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez as a direct follow up to the original 1974 Tobe Hooper outing, thereby disregarding all the other entries in the franchise. Although filming wasn’t all smooth sailing - original filmmakers Ryan and Andy Tohill were replaced during production by David Blue Garcia due to creative differences - Alvarez has form in classic horror remakes with 2013’s Evil Dead generally well received.

Rabbids Invasion: Mission to Mars (2021, Animation, Comedy, Family, Netflix Original Animation, International France, Language English) - added 28-Jan-2022

They could have sent specially trained marsonauts, they could even have sent robots but somehow the logical choice ended up being the Rabbids as the first to be sent on a mission to Mars. Naturally, absolutely nothing goes as planned.

A feature length follow up to the Rabbids Invasion TV series based which was based on the Ubisoft characters and ran from 2013-19.

Will Arnett plays Senior Detective Terry Seattle of the Homicide Division. Unfortunately for Terry, it’s the Homicide Division of Murderville which means every day starts with a new murder case.

Luckily for Terry, each case sees him team up with a new celebrity guest star as his partner. Not so luckily for Terry, the episode’s guest star isn’t given the script and they have no idea what’s about to happen to them. Together, the celeb sidekick and Terry Seattle will have to improvise their way through the case and it will be up to each guest to name the killer.

Among the celebrities scratching their heads will be Conan O’Brien, Ken Jeong, Kumail Nanjiani and Sharon Stone.

If the premise sounds familiar, it’s because it’s an adaptation of BBC3’s BAFTA winning Murder in Successville which starred Tom Davis.

Space Force (2022, S2 Netflix Original Comedy Series)

As head of the sixth branch of the US armed services, General Naird, along with his endearingly dysfunctional crew, has four months to prove that Space Force is worth keeping around - guess the writers were drawing on personal experience for that storyline!

Despite the mixed reviews for season one of Space Force, the second season sees the return of the starry cast which includes Steve Carrell, John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz, Diane Silvers and Jimmy O. Yang. However, there have been some behind the scenes changes which could indicate a different style or direction.

Interestingly, Netflix trademarked the name "Space Force" during production in early 2019. In December 2019, the Trump administration renamed the existing "Air Force Space Command" branch to simply "Space Force", and wanted to trademark the name, but found it couldn't because Netflix had done so first.

Vikings: Valhalla (2022, S1, Netflix Original Drama Series)

Set over a thousand years ago in the early 11th century, Vikings: Valhalla chronicles the heroic adventures of some of the most famous Vikings who ever lived: the legendary explorer Leif Eriksson; his fiery and headstrong half-sister Freydís Eiríksdóttir; and the ambitious Nordic prince Harald Sigurdsson. As tensions between the Vikings and the English royals reach a bloody breaking point, and as the Vikings themselves clash over their conflicting Christian and pagan beliefs, these three Vikings begin an epic journey that will take them across oceans and through battlefields, from Kattegat to England and beyond, as they fight for survival and glory.

From showrunner and executive producer Jeb Stuart, Vikings: Valhalla is set over a hundred years after the end of the original Vikings series - currently available on Amazon Prime Video - and blends historical authenticity and drama with gritty, immersive action.

The original Vikings creator Michael Hirst remains as an executive producer and notes that the show’s time period is one where "the Vikings have overrun most of England and they own Normandy.”

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2022, S15, FX Network Comedy Series) - added 18-Jan-2022
A group of venal, alcoholic, narcissists known as The Gang run a failing Irish bar in South Philly. They can usually be found making up some scheme for sex, money, fame or just to get back at another member of the group. Inevitably this juvenile behaviour causes misunderstandings and friction and more often than not blows up in their faces - sometimes (and deservedly) literally.

Starring Charlie Day, Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, Danny DeVito and Kaitlin Olson, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia was almost cancelled after the first season but the latest season sees it become the longest running live-action sitcom in TV history and it has since been renewed up to season 18.

Meet The Parents (2000, Comedy, PG-13. Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner, Teri Polo, Dir. Jay Roach)
Male nurse Greg Focker is ready to marry his girlfriend Pam but before he pops the question, he must win the approval of her formidable father, a humourless former CIA operative intent on making life difficult for the genial and naive Greg.

Like 1988’s Midnight Run, De Niro shows a natural aptitude for comedically overbearing characters and is gifted one of cinema’s great quotes - lovingly presented in the trailer below.

My Best Friend Anne Frank (2022, Drama, True Life, Period, Netflix Original, International: Netherlands, Language: Dutch, German, Hungarian. Aiko Beemsterboer, Josephine Arendsen, Roeland Fernhout, Lottie Hellingman, Dir. Ben Sombogaart

When two trains, one of which is carrying a nuclear payload, collide in a remote area of Russia, the resulting explosion is used by hijackers to cover up the theft of a warhead. However, unconvinced it was an accident, the U.S. authorities dispatch Special Operations Intelligence Officer Colonel Thomas Devoe and White House nuclear expert Dr. Julia Kelly to track the chief suspect. Together Devoe and Kelly must unravel a conspiracy that goes from Europe to New York, to stop a terrorist who has no demands… but wants to cause nuclear mayhem.

The Peacemaker (not to be confused with John Cena’a upcoming The Suicide Squad spin-off TV series which drops the definite article to just Peacemaker) is a halfway decent action thriller which goes some way towards George Clooney making amends for Batman and Robin which was his other big release in 1997… although he also played Sparky in the South Park series that year, so all is forgiven really.

However, when the victim is found to be connected to an infamous murder case from eight years ago, Wallander quickly suspects that there is more to this incident than meets the eye. Determined to uncover the truth, he refuses to back off - even when the investigation leads him to the door of those who could end his career in a heartbeat.

There’s a slightly confusing feel to the timelines given the show’s modern day setting which puts its events in the same time period as those investigated by the older Wallander in his TV outings but maybe there’s a Wallander Multiverse that explains it all.
