What's new on Disney+ UK for February 2021

Disney’s Star on the rise

by Andy Bassett - Updated:

A notable month for Disney+ UK sees the launch of the Hulu-esque Disney Star service on the streamer, opening up access to the more mature library of content that the House of Mouse is sitting on from the likes of 20th Century Studios, FX and ABC.

Updated 25-Jan-21: Europe From Above S1 (5th Feb) - Bluey S2 (12th Feb) - Marvel's Battleworld: Mystery of the Thanostones S1 (12th Feb) - PJ Masks S4 New Episodes (12th Feb) - The Science of Stupid S2-7 (12th Feb) - Ice Age: Collision Course (26th Feb) - Flicka 2 (26th Feb) - Mickey Go Local (26th Feb)

Updated 28-Jan-21: Full UK line up for Star (23rd Feb)

The timing of Star’s launch has been made with corporate precision as the annual subscription for UK subscribers ticks round in March. Now, that extra couple of quid per month doesn’t seem so bad when it brings John McClane, Peter Griffin, Jack Bauer and The Desperate Housewives with it. There’ll even be some original Star and Hulu content joining the films and shows - it all kicks off from 23rd Feb.

So, from now on, this listing will include library and original material joining Disney+ on the Star platform which should widen choice for viewers after something a little grittier.

Update: 28-Jan-2021
The new service, which will appear as a sixth content option alongside Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic and will launch with over 75 TV series, more than 270 movies and a slate of 4 exclusive Star Originals.

New titles will be added each month (and some presumably withdrawn) from Disney’s various production arms including Disney Television Studios (20th Television and ABC Signature), FX Productions, 20th Century Studios and more. Content available will be territory dependent.

Due to the mature nature of some of the content on Star, Disney will introduce new parental controls on 23rd Feb which will include the ability to set limits on access to content for specific profiles based on content age ratings and the ability to add a PIN to lock profiles that have access to mature content.

Updated 11-Feb-2021: Solar Opposites S1 (Star, 23rd Feb)

Updated 18-Feb-2021: Die Hard removed  - no longer part of the Star launch lineup

As usual, there’ll be new weekly episodes for any ongoing series but we’ll just concentrate on new or returning content.

February sees  a couple more of Disney’s behind-the-scenes explorations of its own properties with more profiles from Inside Pixar as well as Marvel’s Behind the Mask which takes a look at the power of identity.

For a generation of UK adults, Sunday teatime in the late seventies and early 80’s meant it was time to ‘play the music and light the lights’ with The Muppet Show and every episode from the classic five season run from 1976 -1981 comes to Disney+ this month.

The Disney original movie for February, Flora & Ulysses stars Alyson Hannigan, Ben Schwartz and a squirrel with superpowers.

Let’s have a closer look at what’s available to UK Disney+ subscribers during February. As always, we’ve tried to make this list as UK-centric as possible but please bear in mind, in some cases content announcements are not made until quite late on and content is subject to change due to territory and licensing arrangements.

However, as new shows and movies get announced we’ll update the list, so make sure you check back.

Marvel’s Behind the Mask (2021, Marvel Entertainment Original Documentary)

It used to be a no brainer - you became a superhero, you wore a mask… or put on glasses if you’re Kal-El / Clark Kent. Whatever, the important thing was to keep your nerdy real life personna completely separate from your world saving, baddie bashing, awesome alter ego.

It’s not so easy now in the world of superhero blockbusters where audiences want to see their favourite movie star mugs but from the very earliest comic books, secret identities have been an integral part of superheroes (and villains, lest we forget) leading “normal” lives and protecting their loved ones. But as the documentary explains, since the advent of the Marvel Age of Comics in the early 1960s, Marvel’s writers and artists have used the notion of identities to examine the evolving concept of equal rights.

Marvel’s Behind the Mask will feature guests from across Marvel’s 80-year legacy, including the writers and artists behind the rise of characters like Black Panther, Miles Morales, Ms. Marvel, Luke Cage, the X-Men, Captain Marvel, and many other characters in the Marvel Universe, highlighting Marvel’s impact on pop culture and media.

Inside Pixar (2021, S2, Disney+ Original DocuSeries. All episodes available)

Following on from the first season of Inside Pixar which was subtitled ‘Inspired’, comes a second batch of five episodes under the title of ‘Portraits’.

Here we get to meet behind the scenes staff, away from the storytelling front line but just as important in getting the finished product out to audiences.

Ep.2: Rachelle Federico, Production Assistant

Ep.3: Barney Jones, Music Editor

The Science of Stupid (2015-19, S2-7, National Geographic) - Added 25-Jan-2021

Using home footage from wannabe daredevils, The Science of Stupid explores what’s gone horribly wrong in the planning and/or execution of the unfortunate stunt. whether it's down to a lack of consideration for the principles of velocity, rotation, friction (ouch!) or kinetic energy, one thing is for sure, you can't beat science.

Hosted by Richard Hammond and Dallas Campbell.

19th February

Flora & Ulysses (2021, Adventure, Comedy, Family. Alyson Hannigan, Ben Schwartz, Kate Micucci. Dir. Lena Khan)

10-year-old Flora is an avid comic book fan and a self-avowed cynic whose parents have recently separated. After rescuing a squirrel she names Ulysses, Flora is amazed to discover he possesses unique superhero powers, which take them both on an adventure of humorous complications that ultimately change Flora's life - and her outlook - forever.

Based on the novel Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures by Kate DiCamillo, filming wrapped on the project before the pandemic but post production took place remotely afterwards.

The Muppet Show (1976-81, S1-5)

Back in July 2020, Disney+ rolled out Muppets Now, its modern take on Jim Henson’s beloved Muppets, but the real gems were the 120 episodes produced in the UK (which Lew Grade co-produced) during its five season run from 1976 - 81.

Hosted by naive and biddable Kermit the Frog, The Muppet Show was presented as a vaudevillian mix of songs, jokes, sketches with a weekly special guest star. The acts were constantly harangued by resident curmudgeons, Statler and Waldorf and many of the episodes had  backstage shenanigans threatening the smooth running of proceedings.

An array of uniquely designed characters included the main trio of Kermit, Miss Piggy and Fozzie Bear were joined by Scooter, Gonzo, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and his hapless assistant Beaker, the Swedish Chef, Rowlf the Dog, boomerang fish throwing Lew Zealand, band members Dr. Teeth and Animal and the, frankly terrifying, Sweetums.

All of whom featured to some extent in recurring segments such as Veterinarian’s Hospital, Pigs in Space, Rowlf at the Piano, Muppet Labs and An Editorial by Sam the Eagle.

The line up of guest stars included a dizzying array of A list actors and singers such as Steve Martin, Dudley Moore, Rudolf Nureyev. Dom DeLuise, Ethel Merman, Vincent Price, Elton John, Diana Ross, Linda Ronstadt, Peter Sellers and John Cleese (who wrote much of his own material for the show).

Since the commercial breaks in the UK shows were shorter than in the US, an additional 2 minutes of material was aired in the UK Muppet Show episodes, usually a short song and never featuring the guest star - there’s no word on whether it will be these versions that are streamed on Disney+.

23rd February

Star Library Movies

The Star movie rollout kicks off with the second, third and fourth entries in the Die Hard franchise. And while this is of course cause for celebration, most John McClane fans will be wanting the classic first installment at their finger tips (and they'll want it available at Christmas for sure!). Moreover, Die Hard 2: Die Harder (non UHD version) is currently available on Amazon Prime Video UK, so it will be interesting to see whether the licensing allows any kind of overlap after the 23rd Feb.

Die Hard 2 (1990, Action, Thriller. Bruce Willis, William Sadler, Franco Nero, Bonnie Bedelia, Dir. Renny Harlin)

John McClane attempts to avert disaster as rogue military operatives seize control of Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C, while his wife’s plane circles waiting to land.

Same thing.. same guy... more bodies... Sadler's left testicle.

Live Free Or Die Hard (2007, Action, Thriller. Bruce Willis, Justin Long, Timothy Olyphant,  Dir. Len Wiseman)

John McClane and a young hacker join forces to take down master cyber-terrorist Thomas Gabriel who hacks into government and commercial computers across the United States with the goal of starting a "fire sale" that would disable key elements of the nation's infrastructure.

The fourth outing in the series starts to show its creakiness and also is clearly out of decent titles, although non US territories received the film as Die Hard 4.0 because... computers and such. Based on a Wired magazine article, this is the the highest grossing installment in the Die Hard series,

But when they discover that these are not the only girls who have disappeared in the area, they must race against the clock to stop the killer before another woman is taken

American procedural drama television series created by David E. Kelley (Little Big Lies, Mr. Mercedes) and based on the 2013 novel The Highway by C. J. Box and starring Katheryn Winnick, Kylie Bunbury, Ryan Phillippe and Natalie Alyn Lind.

Produced entirely under pandemic conditions, the series only wrapped on 13th Jan 2021, with the first episodes already airing in the US in November 2020.

Helstrom (2020, S1, Hulu)

Brother and sister Daimon and Ana Helstrom are the children of a mysterious and powerful serial killer and share a complex dynamic. They use their own individual attitude and skills to hunt the worst of humanity.

Based on the Marvel Comics characters, Helstrom tells a standalone story within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and was planned as the first series in Marvel Television's 'Adventure into Fear' franchise. It was cancelled on 14th Dec 2020.

Love, Victor (2020, S1, Disney Original Series)

Victor is a new student at Creekwood High School on his own journey of self-discovery, facing challenges at home, adjusting to a new city, and struggling with his sexual identity.

Love, Victor is set in the world of the 2018 groundbreaking film Love, Simon, which was inspired by Becky Albertalli’s acclaimed novel, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda about a closeted gay teenager who is forced to come out after being blackmailed. Nick Robinson, who starred as the titular Simon in the original film, produces and narrates the series and reprises his role here.

Solar Opposites (2020, S1, Hulu Original Animated Series) - Added 11-Feb-2021

Four aliens escape their exploding home world only to crash land into a move-in ready home in suburban America. While they are evenly split on whether Earth is awful or awesome, they agree on their mission which is to protect the Pupa, a living super computer that will one day evolve into its true form, consume them and terraform the Earth.

Co-created by Justin Roiland (Rick & Morty) and Mike McMahan (ex-writer’s assistant on Rick & Morty), the first two episodes will be available at launch on 23rd February with weekly new additions dropping Fridays at 8am GMT.
